Starting the car is probably quicker using smart key than a physical key, though they're pretty much exactly the same. The way the engine is started is the same either way, but with a key, you need to insert it and turn it instead of just pushing the button.

Smart key seems faster.

PS: While the parts catalog for the 2017 still lists the same old high-pressure fuel pump, the part number has actually changed up in the ordering system to the newest ZN6 part number I've seen yet, SU003-07326. I assume that is the newer style pump, but there is no information or stock available on it yet.

Oh, the reason why I say a standard key is probably faster to start a car, is that you have to hold down the start button for about 1.5-2.0 seconds to crank the car. A physical key just gets popped in and turned. It's kind of splitting hairs for real world time, but the point is we have to pay extra for a button, whereas a standard key is free.

You don't have to hold the push button. The moment you press it with the clutch in, the same thing as the moment you turn the key to "start" happens (assuming you don't have to hold the key on start in an 86 like you do in some older cars, in which case, it'd actually be faster by those standards).

In the end though, the cars still takes the same amount of time to start, it would just be a matter of how long until you have both hands free.

Also, it's just as much about the the key-free lock/unlock as it is the keyless start.

edit: Just saw above, you do have to hold the key on start while it kicks over, so it's actually "faster" with a button.

Choices would be better. Let the buyer decide on options.

$400 is probably cheaper than the OEM option. Your self-install also saves money. Good job. Point to the others was I'd happily pass on convenience mods like a start button and dual zone climate and use the money to make the car faster. Nice end game mod though. If Toyota is offering a base 2017 86 at $27k, then maybe out the door prices will be as low as ~$24.5k - $25k. Good value for so much car.

So what does $400 bucks get us?
$400 - 4x BFG Geforce Sport Comp-2s 215/40/17
$320 - RaceComp Yellow or TRD Springs w/OEM Crash Bolts
$400 - Used UEL
$400 - Used Open Flash Tablet
$420 - RaceComp Front Camber Plates
$300 - WinMax W2 Front & Rear Pads + Good brake fluid

Many performance issues addressed for the cost of that button.

I've had my 10 Series Fr-S for nearly three years now and have never had to hold the button, I've always pressed the start button with the clutch held in and it does the rest.

You must have some mad negotiating skills, live in a tax-free state, and have incriminating photos of the sales, finance and general managers of the dealership, if you really believe that.

Yeah really lol in Ontario that would mean you got the dealership to drop the mrsp by 5 grand lol on a brand new 2017 model.

My BRZ needs a push-and-hold. Not a long hold, mind you, but you certainly can't just jab the button and expect it to crank.

My beef with push start is, if I arrive at my destination but am on a bluetooth call or listening to something on the radio, if I shut the car down, the unit takes a full minute to restart, whereas for a physical key, I could just switch the car to "ACC/engine off"

No you don't have to hold it. You just push it and the car starts. Getting a key in a hole is not hard, but....push button is easy.

I'd rather have a more up to date interior I guess. The digital climate control, push start, leather etc is well worth it. Options are always good.
