New 200tw tire from Continental

I guess it was only a matter of time before continental threw their hat in the ring. Although I'm surprised they didn't lean on the Hoosier branding.

So I actually need a set after I burn off my current AO52's. I'm going to pick up a set first thing when they become available on June 1st.

Will report back with Aim Solo 2 data between RS4's, AO52's, and these new challengers.

I think these are supposed to be more of an "enduro" tire like the Hankook RS4 or Maxxis VR-1 than the A052 or RE-71R.

That's what another fellow 86cup driver said. But we won't know till people get there hands on them. Give me endurance with most of the speed at the right price sign me up. But this what the 660s are kinda like already

Most have said the RT660's are not the Enduro tire the RS4 was. Closer to the RE71R in terms of wear.

Also Continentals have never been "cheap", less than Michelins but always more than Hankook or Falken if I had to generalize the brands. Someone correct me if I've miss heard.

Rob,

Good Morning and thanks for writing. After 3+ years of joint partnership with Continental engineering staff we are ready to launch our first Continental branded TW200 Endurance track tire. I am hoping to have the first few 17" sizes in June with the remaining sizes to finally arrive in September. (225/40R-17, P225/45R-17, P255/40R-17)
Our initial spec flyer is attached showing the proposed sizes and car fitments. This is an Endurance Specific Application tire for WRL, Champ Car, AER and other 7 - 9 hour race event per day series.
This is not an autocross tire. You may find this tire will find High Performance Street Enthusiasts as well as Track Day competitors who are not in competition or recording lap times.
The tires are currently being made in Germany and will be arriving at the Hoosier Warehouse in Lakeville, IN to sell through our Distributor Network and Tire Rack.
As we progress through the Summer, if you have any questions, please write me directly.
I am glad to hear there is some enthusiasm for this new tire.

I wonder how they will compare to the RT 660s and RS3s. That's also double the set of the sx2s

The info from the rep and the partnerships with champ and other endurance series indicate that this tire will probably not be as fast as the A052 or the RT660, but will wear much slower. A new RS4 replacement is what everyone seems to be whispering. They should be considerably faster than SX2’s and RS3-S. I’m going to try to reach out to my contact at Hoosier to get more info.

Listened to a webcast today about this tire, they had someone from Hoosier/Continental give a presentation and answer questions.

Sounds like they benchmarked the Hankook RS4 and they think they exceed its grip by a slight margin (0.4-0.6s they quoted -- but no indication if that was per min of lap time or over an 8:40 nurburg ring lap) and the wear is also slightly better.

They didn't say much about heat cycling performance - their testing has been endurance racing for 8+ hour stints. They did say they expected this to heat-cycle out before wearing out. So for HPDE, it seems to me tire life will be dictated by heat-cycles and not much different than the RS4.

To me, it seems hard to justify the 35-40% price premium for a very slight bump in lap time (maybe wear?) over the RS4 (~$237 vs $173 for the RS4 in 245/40-17), unless you are using it in competition.

Seems like a very good tire for endurance racing, but maybe not a big gain for a HPDE tire.
