Enthusiasts are a vocal minority in the grand scheme of things; and even though a car is "tailored towards enthusiasts" it's really business talk for saying "we haven't forgotten about you, here's something you can appreciate too." And appreciative most of us are. PS. you should be happy someone cross shopping an Accord with an FRS is considering buying the car. Less boy racers drifting into telephone poles means lower insurance rates, heh.

What shocked me the most about my time as a car salesman was the sheer amount of people who would come onto the lot with no clue about what car they wanted.
To me this is baffling, how could you know you need a new car and not at least have an idea about the cars you like? For these people a car is simply a way to get from A to B and that is all. So a FR-S would be lost on these people, because fun is not part of their equation. |

Agreed. Especially nowadays with all the information available on the internet. Even if you don't know anything, pick up a magazine or check out a couple websites to at least figure out which car is the best option for your needs and budget. If nothing other than to avoid being taken advantage of by a less-than-honest salesman.
I love getting asked "Where are Subarus made?" I'm gonna start telling people "Australia" just for kicks Everyone remembers the Subie commercials from the late 90's with Crocodile Dundee, right? Subaru "Outback"? Duh, Australia, obviously!

Person 1: So I need a new car (Why? Probably no reason other than wanting to be out of their current car), what should I go with. Person 2 (with SOME knowledge): Well what are you looking for in a car? Person 1: Oh I don't care, something good on gas I guess with decent space. At which point Person 2 simply points them to their favorite brand. Hence why you get people showing up looking like derps: Showing up on the lot without a single clue what they want/looking for. Personally if I were a salesman I'd love this kind of person, you get a greater sense of satisfaction putting them in a car that fits them. It gets even better when you hear back from that customer thanking you for convincing them to get X car. Addendum: I see it often where someone will come to the dealership for service, get one of our 335 or 535 loaners with the sport package and absolutely love the way it drives/feels. "I like the loaner more than I do my car!" And we usually say, "That one has the sport package." and they're like "My next BMW definitely needs to have the sport package, I can't wait till this lease ends."

Yep, makes perfect sense. I like being able to actually feel like I have a purpose in my job, seating someone in the car that fits them best. Otherwise I'm just an order taker and a buffer between the manager wanting to sell the car at full sticker and the customer wanting the car for below invoice.

I am not saying it was not gratifying from the sales person part, just that it confused me that someone would make a $20,000-$50,000 decision with 0 research.

You gotta remember that the majority of car buying adults did not have the Internet or the vast resources available these days to help you make a car buying decision when they bought their first car. Back then the salesman was trully a salesman and had to know his equipment to help the customer make the right decision. These days those rolls have swapped and the informed younger buyer generally knows more about cars on a dealer's lot than the salesman does.

BMW also uses a small turbo on their 2.0 engine, but it’s a twin-scroll design. It makes 260 lb.ft. of torque from an even lower 1250 RPM and it maintains that peak torque until 4500 RPM. Again, this is with a small twin-scroll turbo on a 2.0 engine. Driving cars with either of these engines is an absolute blast simply because they make such fantastic torque way down low in the powerband. This is what the FR-S & BRZ need. A small turbo that helps the engine puts about 260 lb.ft. down in the low revs. I think that’s much better than having a big turbo that makes the little 2.0 boxer engine huff and puff trying desperately to spool it up. Don’t get me wrong---high RPM power is great, but for the street, I’d much rather have low-end torque instead. Did you ever consider going with a smaller turbo that spools up fast? |
