I'm not saying to replace the NA with a standard turbo model. Just saying having a second engine options would be nice. There was a time the Celica was offered in a GT-four trim. A turbo 86 could be a spiritual successor minus the awd. I just think such a model would have made more sense than the 4 banger Zupra. I know its just a pipe dream, but I was just thinking out loud.

The basic layout of the car is great, and it met the approval of Akio Toyoda as a halo sports car, with a vision of creating a 3 model sports car lineup. So now there were 2 sports cars and the third model was to be the least expensive.
Let's say they created all new body panels except the roofline, A pillars, rear quarter are mostly all the same except where the taillights stick out.
Front fenders lowered, new front and rear fascia. New bottom side fascia.Taillights look nicer than best car render, which looks like the uglier option Subaru would have used in past years.
Interior, well the dash follows industry trend to a T. So, usability will improve but the nostalgia and quirkiness and all the "T" Easter eggs gone. This is going mainstream, boys and girls.

Will it succeed? Who f'n knows what will happen but anything and everything going forward should have the ability to go electrified in the future. THAT excites me.

No issue with your second sentence but how do you figure they'll get broken more easily? Unless, side swiping is your driving style...

For whatever reason, the timing of my car purchases seem to coincide with new/refreshed models. I'll once again be in the market Spring 2021 and the 86 is in the cross hairs. If the current edition was slated for no changes, I would be OK with that. I'm also OK with what the recent spy shots are "revealing". Since I'm partial to NA, not being offered with a turbo is fine with me and if in fact it was, I would be looking elsewhere. Which in this day, it's becoming more difficult since the NA market is shrinking. Don't need a big jump in HP since I'm not racing from light to light, so the slight increase in HP just adds to the fun factor. All in all, looking forward to the coming months when we get to see a true production model of the 2021 86.

It's everyone else Most people park by braille and shopping carts or just general dumb fucks in parking lots or even on the street doing dumb things with all out uncaring, disrespect for anything that's not theirs that damage cars. I've seen dozens of FJ Cruisers around here with tail lights cracked on the sides from these geniuses and those lights are higher than most vehicle bumpers whereas these would be right in line with most SUV bumpers making them really vulnerable. The outside of my car is pretty beat up including on the trunk lid where someone dropped something and put 2 dents in it that chipped through the paint and a series of scratches around the fuel fill from a cart that was allowed to run down the hill in a parking lot and smacked into it. Oh and there are the bumper cracks and dings in the paint from those braille parkers but these things are inevitable on a daily driver that does 20k/yr and lives in a large metro area.

IF they listened to the customer you end up with something like this:

If there is a universal consensus of something (design, UI, performance attribute, etc) among the masses, then it warrants attention. If not, its just a bunch of loudmouth people wanting something that someone else doesnt want for reasons.

Makes the one almost invisible single door ding in my 150,000 mile FRS sound good all of a sudden.
The Hakone came with a predinged driver door before I had ever even sat in it but I made the dealer fix that.

Yep turbo has always been very clearly ruled out.

The 86 is a niche car with a very narrow target market. If they want to sell to the current owners they need to give them something far better than the current. If they want to open up the market they have to make it radically different than what we have simce most of the world doesn't even know it exists. If the rumours are even remotely true (they are still just rumours no matter how much some believe everything the internet tells them) then this "next gen" does neither of these things so who are they exactly targeting?

My opinion is that this "next gen" is simply a lazy and cheap appeasement version to say they did SOMETHING for the fanbois. The real next gen will come out for the 2025 zero emissions goals and will not appeal to anybody here.
Potatoe, potahtoe. The majority of the tooling is already on that Gunma line, so it's still going to cost a lot less to work from what they already have. It's clear they are taking a page from the FCA LX cars book and iterating.

Edit: To clarify, I agree with you. They are just going to be making light tweaks because sports cars are a dying market and the Japanese are notoriously risk adverse.

I don't necessarily agree that sports cars are a dying market, its a limited market, but then it always has been.

Every make with a sports car model sells every one they build, which means they know exactly what the market for them is.

If you build a compelling sports car, the enthusiasts will buy it, just like if you build a compelling econobox, econoiasts (?) will buy it. The only difference is volume and whether or not the manufacturer considers it worth their time.
