Well, given that you know your vehicles, you could probably imagine how they'd preform in the alternate transmission ( whether good or bad) , as for most vehicles there is an ideal tranny type, and possibly an alternate ( if two different tranny are offered). Its true in the last 10 years, the ideal for many vehicle is Auto ( some sports cars, most SUVs , most trucks, most Vans , most sedans)...for sure once you're over 3800 lbs curb weight. Now a Tacoma, 2.7L ......if curb weight is around 3800 lbs, manual could still be a good option, especially if you're doing light duty payload and towing....under 1000 lbs.

I have to disagree. I have a turbo-diesel Land Cruiser 80 series that weighs 4,972 lbs stock (mine is much heavier with front and rear ARB bumpers, rock sliders, dual batteries, roof basket with awning, winch and 33" tires) and the 5 speed manual makes it a blast to drive around town, on the highway and in the trail. Wouldn't have it any other way. I also have a Land Cruiser 200 with a 4.5L twin turbo diesel V8 but AT and I can only imagine how much more fun it would be with a manual

You're absolutely right. I suggest you join the Reddit FT86 community. All they do there is talk about rims and tires and take pictures of their cars. No sticks anywhere near their asses!

I'm looking at buying a newer ft86 for my sis.... so for me no. Then, I am buying myself a new Supra.... if within 2 years they don't release a manual (which I doubt they will). Atm, looking at a 2017ish WRX my buddy is trying to get rid off for cheap.

For me it's not the size of the vehicle as much as engine compression, power and axle gearing. A low compression, low power turd that has trouble moving the vehicle and can't engine brake benefits more from an automatic transmission. A more performance-oriented engine seems to ask for more engagement from a manual transmission.

I drove a relatively wimpy S10 for a few years that was manual. It was okay, but I think I would have preferred an auto. My Jeep was fine for years with AT with its 190 HP/220 ft lb low compression engine. Once the stroker went in and bumped the torque by 100 ft lbs, it just begs for a manual.

This is why I could never buy an AT 86. While it's not particularly powerful, this boxer is a high-revving, high compression motor that begs for more engagement than an AT can provide.

What kind of forum experience were you looking for?

Because, back in 2012, when everyone that had a twin, bought it new; Things were different back then. (Though the AT vs MT was being discussed)

By my estimates: 50% of any forum is moronic arguing.

Also, for someone that says that they lack experience with MTs; how do you know a MT would be outclassed? Plus, this does not take into account how much people enjoy their MT.

But, I am glad that you got an AT. (You said you felt like you might do something really stupid if you got a MT!)

Anyway, Check out the Official MEME thread in off topic.
I'm saying a MT in the Supra would be outperformed by the auto. Let's be real here, for any spirited driving it's going to be used in paddle mode, and it's my understanding that these transmissions (at least higher end units) have been faster shifting than manually moving a lever for well over a decade.

I am well aware plenty of people enjoy the option of an MT, but I do find it baffling to prefer something that would be detrimental to the car's performance. Obviously, the inverse is true on the twins, where the manual mode of the AT is okay at best.

And yeah, what I meant by "something stupid" has a lot to do with feeling out the gates. The way back would have involved frequent shifting, and I was having a very hard time feeling between 3rd and 5th. If I could have driven highway home, I probably would have just got the MT. XD
