A lot of talk about MPSS and track use going on here, and I just want to clarify that the MPSS is in no way a "track tire" and was never meant to be the best in that category. In fact, it is known to chunk if you push it too hard on track or autocross because of the softer rubber on the shoulders.

Yep. People running PSSs at AutoX here in FL spray them down with water after each run to keep them cool.

You can get tires just as good for less if you look around. Hankook and Sumitomo are dirt cheap and Firestone's new Firehawk Indy 500 also has good ratings. They might not be 100% as good as PSS, but unless you are tracking I doubt you'll be able to tell, and all 3 are under $100 a tire on tirerack.

That way you can also get good winter's, which you need if you see snow. I also have the General Altimax Arctic, and they are awesome and inexpensive.
Holy cow Batman. Mpss for track? Lol dude those are horrible tires for anything remotely competitive. They "might" be ok and I say "might " with full doubts for even auto-x. Once again some sales person or other victims has lied to you about those being a performance tire good enough for track.

I never said they are track tires. However there are people on here that use them and track their vehicle because they don't want to buy track only wheels and tires.

The only time you could possibly tell the difference between MPSS and its top competitors is either by mounting them back to back, or using them on a track as tirerack does to test them. That is what I said.

I agree 100% that I'd never use MPSS or any other max performance summer tire as a dedicated autocross or track tire.

You can afford winters more than the accident you will have if you try to drive all winter on summer tires. Note, all season tires aren't worth a whole lot more, but they are worth some more. You can get a passable winter package for a reasonable price with new wheels and everything, new... and every year people have used stuff available.

I AutoX'd on PSS yesterday in that same 35 degree spitting little balls of ice or maybe rain and windy as heck did I mention cold... While there are complicating factors limiting my driving, they do reasonably well as long as you're very attentive to smooth input. Cold + wet was a mess though (also, folks that drove later had a very clear advantage... more of the surface was only damp, not lakes...) One slightly happy throttle application saw the car simply lose traction all around and slide sideways for a bit - no control, nothing I could do for a half second but get ready for when traction returned (front tires since I pointed them right...)

Anyhow, you can drive PSS hard in the cold/wet, but they're definitely not at their best. Forget it on snow.

Thanks
I recently switched from stock tires to MPSS. One caveat- the rear of my car is gutted, front seats back- so the road noise thing... take it as you like.

MPSS are a lot louder. They pick up more dirt and rocks, so there's more noise from that. Rain noise is a lot louder. All road noise is louder.

I'm not sure about 40's (I'm in FL) but in the rain, the MPSS are night and day compared to the stockers. SO MUCH BETTER. The rainy grip of the MPSS is almost on par with the dry grip of the stock Primacies.

Try MPS4S. They are quieter and have much improved wet grip then PSS.

i've noticed as i've put about 4-5K miles on them, not every frickin pebble sticks to them anymore.

but yeah, you will get a lot more pebble noise lol. especially if your seats are gutted.

I would go with Firestone Indy 500 as they are cheaper than a lot of summer tires and have loads of grip in the dry AND wet setting. Just because they are cheap does not mean they are bad as there are nothing but GREAT reviews on this tire.

If the pebbles aren't sticking anymore then the suck must already be setting in. Hahaha

I considered the Firestone, but they're a bit weak in stopping distance, especially in the wet. That and the non existent cost difference are the main reasons why I went with the V12s again.

MPSS are great DD tires. The have good wet traction, and can be driven at 45f and below. I find they lack grip at lower temps (45f and under), and can suddenly lose traction. I do not push mine when its cold. ( I drive my truck )

it is as the re-003 is a japan only tire.

It is so much better to run winter & summer wheels. Winter tires can easily be run up to 60 degrees and summer tires are so much better for the rest of the year. And if you keep them on an extra set of wheels you can always change them out if the weather does something unexpected.
