Drain Bolt Magnet?
As posted yesterday by forum member Alienate in the mechanical maintenance forum under title: When should i do an oil change?
He drained the oem oil from his brand new ride after only 500 miles... Then he put a magnet into the used oil... The magnet picked up "HUNDREDS" of metal shards... some as big as a QUARTER INCH! UPDATE: The FRS/BRZ/GT86 do NOT have any magnets inside the engine oil pan or on the drain bolt. Last edited by Anorexic 86; 12-24-2014 at 07:58 AM. |

Definitely ordering my oil today so I can do my change at 1k. I've been working it a little hard so it deserves it.

Believe it or not that's normal for a new engine. Actually oil pans have magnets on them to trap the really huge particles. Your picture nicely illustrates why an oil change at 500-1000 miles is a really good idea

Does this car not have a magnetic plug in the oilpan?
Would be a good cheap little aftermarket part...... |

I changed mine yesterday at 600 miles and also ran a magnet through the oil.

What is the magnet in, what exactly is that a picture of? Im surprised it was that bad? I am not sure if there are magnets in the oil pan, transmission pan yes, but oil pan, never heard of that. Where do the larger shavings come from, what could possibly wear that much in 500 miles. I thought engine tolerances were so good that this type of thing did not get that bad.

As far as I'm aware, engine oil pans do not have any magnets in them. Automatic transmission oil pans do have magnets built into them. That photo definitely looks bad (wonder if some dippy salesman was winding up the engine in neutral to show off to perspective customer?). There are many different manufactures of oil filter magnets and I run one on all of my cars. Hypothetically, you could even go to a store and just pick up a few magnets and stick them on the filter. Once a car has a few thousand miles on it, they shouldn't pick much up, but initially it can be very helpful.
