They went pretty aggressive on the widebody. I did not expect that.

Not messing around, straight WRC/GT300 haha

Pretty much everything anyone would have hoped for in the thing - Yaris what?

I'd guess over $40k for the launch edition, at least with destination. But right around 40

Its a little bit one sided though....

Subaru = Heres your new AE86, we get a version too!
Toyota = Thanks, and agreed!

Subaru = We made a new WRX, our customers said they liked the cladding! But its a Sedan only, and the STI is dead while we explore the EV options.
Toyota = Here's a rally inspired AWD hot hatch!
Subaru = Hey can we have a version to stopgap while we explore our EV.....
Toyota = NO ITS OURS!!!!

The most *positive* comment I've heard about the WRX fender cladding is, "if you get one in black or dark grey you can almost not see it".

I don't get the hate. They're fenders. Paint them. And no WRX has been good looking. 30% stiffer, less resistant to understeer with better steering feel and power delivery. 1 dimensional enthusiasts hate it. And they're 14. Glad the differentials made into into the Corolla. This might be a 2nd car.

a) If I'm spending 35-40k on a brand new car, I have no desire to start shopping around for someone to paint parts of it just to make it look acceptable. Not to mention the fact that the plastic is textured, so even painting it all would look like crap. Do you really want orange-peel fenders, bumpers, etc?

b) The WRX is supposed to be a sport-sedan, not a "sports utility sedan". When's the last time you saw BMW (arguably the world's leader in sporty sedans) put black plastic over-fenders on any of their M cars? Or anyone else for that matter?

c) Yes, it may be technically better... fine. I still won't buy a car that looks like a Tonka toy.

Best Car Mag was once again quite close. Seems like they got someone on the inside over at Toyota.

Think it looks great. Wish front bumper design followed the GR Yaris bumper but it is still aggressive enough. I like the hood bulge and hood vents.

Damn a potential GRMN 86 vs GR Corolla vs manual GR Supra.. going to be so hard to pick for me.

If they would have called it an Outback XT sedan, it would have been mildly approvable.

Never in my wildest dreams would I have expected it to be as gross an overall package as it came out. I mean it's an objectively good WRX, but the repulsion from the community is genuine. It could have been so much better so easily.

Did you really just compare the appearance of a BMW with a Subaru?
The WRX/STi have always had a sort of agricultural or industrial look to them. It was part of their charm. Cladding aside the new WRX just looks like a plain old sports sedan no different that myriad others on the road, including BMW! The cladding does not appeal to many but it is the only defining feature now.
