Crash Tests?

Hi all,

I've got a deposit placed for a GR86 as my new daily and while it's not on the top of my list, crash safety certainly factors in the decision.

That being said, I've been searching everywhere for crash ratings and it seems like it just hasn't been done yet, which seems odd to me as both the new twins are already for sale to the public.

Does anyone have any idea when IIHS/NHTSA/EuroNCAP will be testing these?

They have undoubtable already been tested but it can take a while before the numbers get published.

I would highly doubt they have changed from the 4 stars across the board of the first gen. There just hasn't been that big a change in them.

I figured it would be quite similar to the first gen, I just wanted to see video/data. I know most new cars will pass with flying colors but it's nice to see it for yourself instead of assuming.

Well this is about as safe an assumption as you can possibly make.

I would say it would've improved with the Active safety assistance systems on the automatic like rear cross traffic alert, adaptive cruise control etc... Also passive safety improvements like Drivers Knee airbag etc.

If it does go down, it'll probably because of changed crash standards/criteria... They seem to update those every few years

It's guaranteed not to score top. The NCAP and any organization that uses that system, this car's best score is likely to be 3 stars tops and the manual is 2 stars. It significantly punishes cars without the new safety suites with their modern criteria, manual of course having none while the auto has in essence EyeSight lite.

IIHS, it could score excellently in all the testing. It will not be a Top Safety pick however due to once again the weak or minimal safety suite. The old car was a Top Safety pick winner because it preceded this criteria.

This might very well be one of the last cars made that can be optioned without the safety suite systems. Genuinely a brave decision by Subaru and Toyota.

That's the downside of a car where the safety suite consists of "don't be a fool"

yep. it's important to remember that crash testing is no longer just about smashing and survivability anymore. hell, even a car built 10 years ago is safer now than anything tcoat grew up with!

This is fucking ridiculous. With all these nannies the automakers are made to cater to degenerates who never should be placed behind the wheel if they need all that crap.

That's for sure! Hell, you can go back way more then 10 years to find safer cars.
The old adage of "they don't make them like they used to" is a very good thing.
At least 6 cars that I owned as daily drivers didn't even have seatbelts.
Use this video when people insist that the big old cars were safer.
No crumple zone, airbags, restraints, nothing.
All the kinetic energy and big heavy steel parts all gets placed square onto the driver.

and the 10 year old cars would now get an 'F' rating by the new system!

Yep, fer sure, especially the cars that @Tcoat was raised in, were further weakened by the Canadian rust -
