Why hasn't radar (or other follow distance based) cruise control become more widely available? Without it cruise control is basically useless on even a slightly busy highway and it's been out for ages in mid-upper tier luxury cars. Seems like most of the cost would be in development but the actual components shouldn't be exorbitantly expensive.

As a service Advisor for Honda, I can tell you that radar/front camera issues are far more annoying to deal with. Not having the nannies keeps the driving stress-free. These things present so much B/S. When they work, they're nice. When they don't, you'll despise the car.

I guess dumber than the demographics of 20 years ago who could tell a distinct difference (in total driving experience) between a 4/5 seat liftback coupe, a small 2 seat mid engine lightweight, or a 2+2 GT heavy weight?

A lot of people choose a car without a real care for the performance capabilities. If Toyota were to bring out an 86 that outperformed the lowest end Supra, we might think it's dumb, but I doubt Supra buyers would even care.

Toyota's adaptive CC worked flawlessly for me when I drove a CHR for a week while my FRS was getting the timing cover resealed I actually wouldn't mind if Toyota is able to incorporate the iMT stuff from the Corolla Hatch where you get adaptive CC + the ability to use the clutch and change gears without cancelling your CC! pretty cool IMO and I can't imagine the system really adding much weight

And the Subaru Eyesight system worked perfectly in the wife's Impreza and Outback. They have the tech from both manufacturers but don't seem to want to use it in the Twins.

I personally do not need or want any of the new safety nannies (AEB, BSM, ACC etc). ABS and TC (that can be switched off if desired) is all I need. However, I understand Toyota will be under pressure to include all the latest safety nannies if they want the best safety rating. So I suspect the next gen twins will get all this stuff (that adds weight, cost, and complexity). Oh well.

The Distracted Driving Package isn't all bad. The ACC is actually pretty sweet on a long highway run. Not like you are forced to use any of it.

That reactive cruise control thingie is brilliant on long boring hyway drives, plus no speeding going down hills.

As stated, if you don't want to use it...don't, pretty simple really.

Not everyone is "speed racer" every time they are behind the wheel.

Plus I'm all for people turning off all the nannies because they "don't need them", it just means a constant supply of parts coming from auto wreckers.

I am fine with things you can easily switch on or off like adaptive cruise, especially if they stay off if you don't want them. Problem is some things like lane departure warnings and AEB tend to switch themselves back on every time you start the car.

I've driven the new Swift with really annoying and overly sensitive lane departure warning and AEB, and it gets old really fast. Nothing worse than the system going nuts every time you take a corner perfectly within your lane, or when in stop and start congested traffic. It wouldn't be such an issue if all the systems were really well tuned, but some of them are not, they are too sensitive and intervene or blurt out warnings in perfectly safe circumstances.

Yeah, I don't know how any of us survived this long, including driving for decades, without all the latest safety nannies. Look, they are fine for careless and distracted drivers, of which there are plenty, but don't paint all drivers with the same brush. Not everyone is a moron texting away on their phone whilst driving drunk.
