Michelin Cup 2017 - Round 1 Perfect Power (Dyno) results

Write up by Chris Wall Media:

Round 1 of the Michelin Cup series kicked off with a dyno day at Perfect Power / GNG Developments on the 28th January. It seems that the news of how good the 2016 series was has spread as this year we saw at least 100 entries for the event, the most to date.

Entrants of the Michelin Cup series register and they get to tell the organisers which class they'd be running in and what power their cars make. The dyno day is the first event as it gives everyone a chance to show what power they make, and based on the results, this will ensure that the cars compete in the right class to make the event fair for all. This is a good way to make sure the next event at Redstar Raceway sees the maximum action between competitors.

At the dyno day there were 100 entries, and even though the weather was a little on the damp side, the majority pitched up for a couple of runs on the rollers, which were quite stingy if comments heard on the day were anything to go by. Be that as it may, it made no difference if guys made less power than they're used to as everyone was on the same rollers on the same day under the same conditions - a level playing field.

There were many competitors seen from last year's event, as well as a some new ones, but at the same time some familiar faces were missing. Still, for this year, the spread of cars is brilliant, from cars making some really big power to cars making just a little more power than the bigger cars do at idle.

In the lower rungs there was a hard-fought battle not to be the lowest-powered car of the day but Marcelle Joubert's Suzuki Alto managed to push out 33.9kW to beat Marko Mandusic's 33.6kW in his Kia Picanto. At the top of the ladder we saw some great power figures from some interesting cars. The strongest front-wheel drive car seen on the rollers was Riaan Esterhuysen's Honda Civic that kicked out a very impressive 325.9kW, and that was with the boost turned back a little. In the 4-wheel drive class the top dog was Feron Lee Somiah's Subaru STi with an insane 306.4kW. One noteworthy mention is also in the 4-wheel drive class, Feroz Ebrahim's car for the year, a Mitsubishi Evo 9, made 289.9kW. The strongest rear-wheel drive on the day was a BMW E36 328i Turbo with 331kW - also the strongest overall on the day.

With power figures sorted and classes configured properly, the rest of the Michelin Cup series for 2017 promises to be even better than last year's one. We'll catch on the 25th February at Redstar.

Catch the full day's results here:

Yes, it should be anti-clockwise.

If you've never seen it that way, here's what it looks like -

Be grateful for the comforts of the 86!

My car doesn't have luxuries (necessities?) like windscreen wipers, a roof, windows or rain friendly tires.

So I tried installing a roof, and windscreen "wipers" (from a bottle). Let's see how it goes ...

Michelin Cup event 2 at Red Star on the 25th.
Sadly the organisation of the event was weak, so it got off to a shaky start and there were hassles with timing transponders.

There were 2 x 86's racing, and they both looked and went great

Sadly, I didn't have my 86 there because it's still got a niggling misfire, but I did have a jol in my Z4. Here's a video taken in session 1 of Class B.

Sometime RSR's many corners can be confusing and you don't know which way to go. See just before the end of the video

Also had fun, even though they didn't allocate me to a session, then I asked and put me in the C class, asked to change to A class, went out, and they lost my number again until I went and asked again.
I made a video as well:
[ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IE3VuUu77kY"]2017-02-25 Red Star Raceway - YouTube[/ame]

Need to see if I can salvage anything from my wet lap recording. My insurance called me three times, "There has been harsh acceleration and sudden stops", each time while I am in the middle of a lap, which stopped the recording.

Round 2 2017 - Redstar Raceway

Write up by Chris Wall Media:

With most Gautengers thinking about trading their cars for jet-skis and submarines, many thought this second round of the Michelin Cup Series for 2017 may just be postponed thanks to a downpour.

But guess what? Cars are waterproof, so come rain or shine, it was all systems go.
Luckily the dark and overcast skies and the little bit of drizzle dried up and moved along to leave competitors with a dry track.
This leg of the series is a fun one, especially for the pig power cars because they have the chance to stretch their legs on Redstar's long straights.
It's easy to see which cars have great power and which have great handling. The powerful stuff pulls away when the track opens up but the lesser-powered cars catch up in the bends, getting so close that they have to back off.
So while many reckon the big cars have the advantage, the smaller stuff can hold its own with a competent driver at the wheel, and most entered are certainly competent.
The field of cars entered was great, loads of fast Subarus and BMWS came out to play along with the usual host of Audi and Renault streetcars with the odd random manufacturer chucked in between.
That old Porsche looked great on track, as did the turbocharged Beetle that taught an A45 AMG a lesson in speed.

Sadly there were a few hiccups with the day, forcing a much later start than anticipated.
The issues that arose were sadly beyond the control of the Series organisers. Basically what happened was that when the event was planned there would be a field of 80 registered cars and 20 day entrants, capping the field at 100 cars.
On the Thursday preceding the event, the organisers were told that the timekeepers booked for the day of the event had let the track down and wouldn't make it to the event, and this saw just 40 timing transponders supplied for a much larger number of competitors, and out of those 40 it seemed (to me) like only around half were rotated between the cars, adding to the frustration of some guys who really wanted to get on track.
Sorting out a system that would allow for everyone to get in a decent amount of track time took a while, but at around 11 o'clock things started to smooth out.
By this time though, there were a few of the regulars who left the event because they hadn't had track time since arrival before the sun came up (well, tried to come up), while some other cars had managed to squeeze in two sessions by that time.
Unfortunately these things sometimes happen at events - life happens and we're all just along for the ride.
It's the first problem that's arisen over the years that the Michelin Cup Series has been running, and if I know the organisers like I think I do, they will do their best to make sure it doesn't happen again.
Those who stayed had a good time on track, as you can see from the photos. If you car isn't in the pics. then we must have missed each other while I was doing my rounds... Until Round 3 - stay safe!
