2019 is a very possible date for a revised engine.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazda_...generation_(ND)
No, because Mazda generations last for 7+ years. The middle year is used for a minor refresh and special edition. They are a small company so they start a generation near the front of the pack then gradually get left behind as a model ages. The new Skyactiv-X, the HCCI engine that promises more fuel economy, will go on their big sellers first. That being the CX-5, Mazda6, and the Mazda3. Then in 2022 or so they'll put it in the MX-5 where it'll make about the same power to weight ratio at a heavier curb weight.

Bob Hall already mentioned in one of his countless interviews that the Miata (Light Weight Sports Project) was never meant to fit into the company's standard refresh cycle.

Naw they will put that engine into the next gen MX-5 right after the Mazda 3. The MX-5 is their halo car...they know the MX-5 needs more power but maybe this 181 HP engine is a finally a bespoke mazda engine just for the MX-5...

That is Mazda speak for "they aren't going to do much in the way of changes for long periods of time." The Mx-5 is what it is. They're not going to radically change it in a mid cycle refresh.

Yup just making running changes as needed. I believe Tom Matano originally went to BMW to learn how to design models that could last 10 years instead of 4.

Mazda is simply continuing this philosophy with the ND.

And I think Mazda is considering such a change to the 2.0L engine not because the current one is underpowered, but to possibly make it with power delivery characteristics more like their 1.5L and older offerings (7500rpm redline and making power near the top).

Leaked documents confirm big changes for the 2019 Miata

https://www.roadandtrack.com/new-car...werful-engine/

Looks like they are re-designing the engine to breathe and rev more freely and the car will have 26 more horse power (20%) and a bit more torque through the power band.

It's also getting a telescoping steering wheel, automatic city braking, dual mass fly wheel, stronger manual, rear view camera and much of the GT equipment moves down to the entry model as standard.

Your move Toyobaru!

what is a telescopic steering wheel? I had a dual mass fly wheel in another car before, and while the resulting refinement is great if that's what you're looking for, the cost of a replacement is a tad steep.

The wheel can be adjusted to go away or closer to you, like how the 86 wheel is. The lack of a telescopic wheel on the ND was a big complaint for many people.

I feel bad for all the people who bought 2017-2018 NDs, they must be pretty jelly.

Ordinarily I would be skeptical, but I followed the links and it's a Canadian Mazda dealership staff briefing document. Someone is going to get fired.

I wouldn't be surprised if Mazda "Leaked" it themselves. There are already reports on Miata.net of individuals driving the revised Miata over in Europe. Miata.net is a pretty level headed place and they all seem to treat these "Leaks" as truth already. Until I hear otherwise I think these MY19 changes are legit.

Now I'm not one of the "OMG 86 is underpowered" crowd....

But seriously, Mazda's done in a couple model years, what Toyota/Subaru have steadfastly refused to do in 6?

Hopefully the next gen gets a boost in power, preferably torque. Then I’ll upgrade.

Don't forget the ND was a significant DROP in power from the NC, and even at 181HP, the ND still doesn't quite match the power to weight ratio of the twins (0.0738 hp/lb vs 0.0745 hp/lb), and that's assuming it doesn't gain any weight.

Anything less than a 50 HP increase won't placate the '86 needs moar powr' crowd. That's not happening without a major engine redesign (NA 2.4 most likely) and they're keeping that R&D cost for a new model. Keep in mind that Toyota needs the Supra to come out first since a more powerful twin would come awfully close to the performance of a base Supra (if the last gen base Z4 is anything to go by). Otherwise it will eat into the early Supra sales, which should be huge considering the following the Supra name has.
