This is a strategy to match the competition. While Subaru dropped the Forester XT, Ford has the Edge ST now, and Mazda offers a CX5 Signature with more power than many luxury cars in that class. It is also part of their plan to rebrand hybrids/electrics as performance models like Tesla has done—instead of something that is geared just for eco-minded hippies for boring econoboxes.

With Prime, I think they've redefined the CUV segment that Toyota owns being on schedule to sell 435,000 RAV4's this year. In some areas of the US there are long wait lists for the standard RAV4 Hybrid. This one will be a home run. Good to see Toyota finally exploit LiOn tech and juiced motors for performance instead of just economy and weight savings though it scores there, too. Given that the same platform is shared with Camry and Avalon, I wouldn't be surprised if the Prime drivetrain is offered in at least Camry, doubtful about Avalon since it gets the axe soon. It's a good effort that makes me hopeful future Toyota PHEV's will offer more than bragging rights at Whole Foods. |

I like seeing acceleration being touted by manufacturers, especially Toyota. I would like it even more if the emphasis would somehow spread to the 86 platform.

Me too. Basically the 86 is a designed driving experience. Space mountain rollercoaster feels fast but actually only goes like 28 mph. Same kinda thing

So let's have this powertrain in the next 86, and call it 0-60 in 4.8 seconds (with plenty of reserve power.) A newly inverted torque dip addresses that issue, and even lower COG (due to the batteries being in the floor in a similar chassis.) Pipe, yes, but hey, the car was brought up in our forums so why not?

Plus once she gets into her new RAV Prime, it'll become easier to justify a Supra that by then will be deeply discounted and most likely cost less than the RAV. |

Well, seems Toyota woke up a touch. Hopefully its not the shit drivetrains of the Prius, but I bet it is.
I love the (on battery) power delivery in our Volt. It's enough with the generator going. It never drives on the gas engine though, unlike the Prius. Still don't want one of these though.
