Higher combustion speed for efficiency is also now a strong emphasis in design, and as a result there's much less power to pick up at the top end by leaning out AFR.

If you care about being smog legal, the FA20's main cats are the ones in the header, and can't be removed.

The good news about this 2.4 is that with a 13.5 compression ratio, you can probably safely bet that with a bit of E85 mixed in the tank, a bit of timing advance will pick up noticeable power. 240hp on 95 R+M/2 fuel is my guess.
Oh yeah, some cars will need headers. But I've seen in general, if you have collectors from the heads with deleted cats, you will gain whp equivalent to the stock crank hp. if anything, the emission system will be a similar setup with 2 cats. The engine bay almost looks the same.

Take the twins for example, various US sources report high 5s to 60mph. But instrumented testing here reveals 0-100kmh times of mid-high 7s. Nearly 2s difference cannot be explained by an extra 2mph, one extra gear change and not including 1 foot of roll out, can it? I’d expect all that to add 1s at most, but a 2s discrepancy is not uncommon.
Motor Magazine here had the BRZ and 86 tested as 6.9 sec 0-100 km/h and 14.9 sec quarter mile (tested at different times too). I usually see low 7s from different sources, rarely mid to high 7s, not that it matters much.

The US mags long ago went to 0-60 times "with a 1-foot rollout" which shaves a couple/few tenths, which is kinda b.s. to me... I can see doing that with 1/4-mile times/speeds as that's how it's done at the drag strip, but only reason to do it with "0"-60 is to make the time quicker. But it's no longer ZERO to sixty...

Stopped by to congratulate Subaru and Toyota for producing a second generation FT86, and to praise them for moving to a 2.4L without significantly increasing curb weight (it's too bad they couldn't reduce it, but that probably would've cost too much, and it's still lighter than the E30 M3).

Though I went back to the MX-5 years ago, the BRZ still has a special place in my heart. It's great to see the only reasonably priced, lightweight, RWD, 4 seat sports car live on.

I'm honestly hoping that the 2.4L responds well to bolt ons. Though the nature of my job is monotonous (and that doesn't bother me), explaining to people why the BRZ/86 are great cars does eventually start to wear me down when I have so much excitement in my soul for it and they can't see it. In a world where people need 1g of acceleration even from an SUV, people shun the brz/86 for not having having it. I just want it to be quick so they can get over it and see how truly amazing the car is for its other qualities.

The VQ35HR will put you at 300whp. FA20 will put you at around 200whp. My buddy had a swapped k20 with 225whp in his civic. Another one had a bolt on K20 in his RSX Type S with the same power. The Camaro LT1 will make 450whp with a bolt on and tune. A FBO E92 M3 will make near 414whp with FBO and etc. So I think it's safe to say Gen 2 FRS will make ~250whp with e85.

I understand what you're saying. It just feels like such a loose rule I'd hesitate to say it to someone else, and would rather refer to expected gains from bolt-ons and tune in percentage, rather than telling then straight up " yo, expect to make your WHP the same as factory rated CHP if you do bolt ons!".

Your point isn't lost on me, I'm just obstinate. You've proven your point, I concede

Do they all do this? I thought most posted 0-60 then rolling start to 60.

That I think is fair, because that helps balance out cars with launch control and those that don't have it. The other option would to be to produce 0-60 best tech and 0-60 no tech I suppose.

Instead of 0 - 60/62 times lets not ignore it but rather prioritise the the peak speed in each gear and measure how long that takes, maybe more relevant in understanding a cars on paper performance in light of all the efforts to get cars to meet emission regulations.

And adding to the announcement of the second gen, I look forward to the GR86 as Subaru's chipper gecko with chubby cheeks doesn't do it for me, it hasn't strayed too far from the first generation of Twins which I'm happy for.

Can I have: 'what is a downshift for 100 points please'
Oh god yes.

For those that aren't aware, you can do 140 km/h in 4th gear and not even be close to the red line if you need to merge quickly.

I like what they've done the GenII. They addressed a lot of what the market wanted IMHO. It's a fantastic car for 30K and hope people realize what a bargain it still is. It does it all. DD, weekend toy and an excellent track car right out of the box. Thumbs up Subaru!

I want the engine in my car Shouldn't be long before people start the swap. Few years at most before it's figured out?
I'll be pulling off the rear LCAs when I move to the new model. Fingers crossed they will fit.

I took a quick look at the 2022 and 2018 engine bays side by side and they are are very, very close. The only obvious thing I could see was that the sound tube connection was missing from the new engine bay.

Edit. Added pictures.
