Seriously, arguing about the transmission choice and putting people down for what they chose is lame.

The FR-S is one of the best for $:Fun ratio and if you`re driving the car as a daily and trying to enjoy it. The manual is a must, sure it will require more work in the beginning since the learning curve is steep for the first day or two but once you get the feeling of the clutch and timing those days will be behind you. After getting comfortable, you open a whole range of pedal techniques like double clutch and heel and toe. The fun never ends in a manual imo. (some people may say rush hour traffic can be a PIA)
But honestly, the key here is that it`s an FRS. You win regardless of the transmission and is really your choice but just make sure the reason you chose an auto is not because you`re afraid of the learning curve. You will regret not trying a stick shift all the way. Make the choice after driving a manual FRS hard.

Like others have said, the key is preference. If you enjoy or want to learn manual, do it. If you don't there is an excellent auto transmission (I'm biased). However, unless you've lived in Southern California, you really have no idea how bad REALLY bad traffic is, and when it's your daily commute, there are some compromises to make. But it's an FRS/BRZ/GT86. There is no "bad" option, especially once you experience this chassis on a twisty road.

I feel like this is like a subset of people arguing whether the FRS or BRZ is better.
In the end: who gives a shit? It's your car, enjoy it how you want. No need to ask for peer validation unless you also rely on us to select wheel color, tire tread pattern, car color, which coilover is better..... o wait. |

I really wanted the manual because 1) last car was an automatic and I found it very boring to drive. 2) Husband (not a car person) insisted for at least 6 months that "nobody made stick shifts anymore" and I got tired of defending 3) I liked supporting a company who would actually make this car. The only times I have wished for an auto have been in very heavy traffic (which I typically only do once a week) and sometimes when I am really tired.

Previously owned cars: 2011 civic si , 2010 mk6 GTI with DSG and now AT 86, and 1993 Miata 5spd manual.
I daily drive my Miata in NYC traffic and I hate balancing clutch/gas to constantly crawl forward, especially on slopes in bumper to bumper. I bought the AT FRS because the transmission is GREAT! I always drive in manual mode because I like to "control" what gear I'm in. I can't comment on the paddles because I always use the shift knob since I'm used to driving manual. The AT changes gears in 200ms despite not being a DSG. The automatic rev match is AWESOME and addicting ; 90% of the time I engine brake. The only reason the auto is slower in a circuit is because of the tall gearing. Which I will be addressing with 4.55 gears as soon as I find a cheap set. I can do donuts, burn outs and brake stands. The only thing I can't do is clutch kicks, and clutch dumps but I wouldn't do them anyway if I had a manual. I prefer to use the hand brake. |

What iag48st said. Although I do find the stock auto has some cooling issues, as it tends to buck when upshifting after running hot, at least for me.
