Manual grinding sound

Hey guys,

Im new to manual cars and I recently just learned to drive. Im not great at it and i still occasionally stall but something that has bothered me
Was that when i slow down for a stop
Light i put it in neutral, then as i am still moving at say 15 mph with the clutch still in after putting neutral, i move it to
First with the clutch still down to get read for a green light at a stop, when doing this i hear a grinding
Sound right before it fully enters 1st gear and i feel it in the stick everytime maybe even other gears.

Anyone know if this is normal?

are you pushing the clutch pedal all the way down? are you jiggling the shifter while your in neutral?

Stop putting the car in first gear at 15 MPH. You're going to destroy your synchros. Only engage first when stopped or barely moving.

Im not downshifting to first though, im in neutral while the clutch is sill down breaking for a stop light and right before while the clutch is still in, i move it To first to prepare to go from a stop when the light turns green

That sounds exactly like downshifting into first to me. When the clutch is depressed the input shaft and engine are disconnected, but the output shaft is still connected to the wheels. Whenever you move the gearstick into first you're changing gears, whether or not the clutch is engaged.

so wait, by that logic: whenever you shift with the input shaft and output shaft engaged to their perspective ends, you're still grinding the gears

Yes, if the input shaft speed doesn't match the output shaft speed.

1st gear should ONLY be used at a complete stop. DO NOT ever down shift in to first...fastest way to screw shit up

No; you'd have to rev-match perfectly while in neutral to downshift (i.e. push the gearstick out of gear without using the clutch, rev-match, push the gearstick into the next gear), and time upshifts perfectly so that the input shaft speed would slow down to the right speed to match the output shaft as you engage the the next gear. It requires a lot of precision. I've personally never tried clutchless shifting.

Use your brakes when you get under 15.. Those are way cheaper to replace..
