So they stopped orders on July 20. Started orders on July 23 and stopped again on July 28?

At least there is an actual official statement this time!

This all just seems odd to me if true.

According to a report by BestCarWeb, the newly remodeled BRZ/GR86 will be coming next spring and will make its global debut in March 2021. You definitely want to wait for the next-generation models because the sport coupes are getting a new engine and technology upgrades.
Why wait until March (which is Spring) to debut the car? So basically they are doing a "when it goes on sale you'll see it" marketing campaign? Just makes no sense.

If that really is the case we should be seeing some not-rebodied test mules really soon

Unless the body in white remains unchanged

Subaru very rarely announces a new model until much of the older model inventory has been sold. They are also very good at hiding their test mules in plain sight, like the new engine in another model, or the previous gen model...no one looks twice.

Reminds me of a story from Nasioc...

In 2004 a Subaru enthusiast on Nasioc noticed 2 plain looking 2004 Legacy's at a hotel in Alaska with their hoods up and 4 Japanese fellows frantically working under the hoods. He walked up to see if they needed help and found both cars fitted with 2.5L turbo motors, he snapped a few pics before they hastily closed the hoods and left...turned out they were test mules for the 2005 Legacy GT Turbo's. A option Subaru didn't mentioned was coming until the actual unveiling of the new Legacy & Outback models.

Yeah I guess it makes sense that they clear out the remaining 2020 stock before marketing for the 2021 model starts. Guessing it can’t be too far away.

Considering that most dealers can’t keep them on the lot for longer than a week the stock should dry up quickly now.

So, I'm an instructor at our local track and the track manager is a friend of mine. He told me that Toyota (this is the closest track to their US headquarters) is doing some marketing type stuff at the track in the very near future and that he knows the test driver for the next 86 (he's friends with Randy Pobst, and was a test/development driver for Cadillac back when they were doing the first CTS V).

Toyota is hosting a tech tour at the track on Saturday (it's for the Supra though) and I plan on trying to find out if they have any info on the new 86. My friend couldn't outright tell me anything, but with a wink and a nod he let me know that the new 86 will be at the track doing a photo/video shoot in the next couple of weeks (could have happened as early as this week). I didn't press him for too much info since he was giving me as much as he was allowed to without violating any NDA's.

I've got a few member day passes, I'll let him know that I want to use one on the day Toyota will be there (or just find out more details). He made it sound like the car is pretty much ready to be announced/unveiled and they are just waiting for the proper timing. It seems too late for a 2021, but I would be surprised if the new 86 isn't a 2022 model.

They'll definitely have a test mule in this track. Maybe you can get some photos or more info?

Photos will probably be a big no no, but I could get an up close view and possibly some info about the car. I've been told it has "more power" and all but confirmed the 2.4L NA motor that's become the consensus.

From the sounds of it, there has already been a test mule on the track and the final version of the car is ready to go.

WOW
You guys went from the real info that the orders are closed to taking pictures of the guaranteed final version at a track in Texas in record time! No wonder there are so many that believe the clickbaits.

I will believe it when I see it but have serious doubts we will see anything yet at all.
