TRD Exhaust drone.

hey all,

so i have a 2018 brz. and i put the TRD catback system on and for some reason i get some god awful drone right around 2-3k rpm if im off the gas / down shifting.

i plan on picking up the JDL catted + resonated FP/OP combo. i was wondering if this would help any with the drone? or if im better off swapping catback to like the q300.

thanks in advance

Do you currently have catless headers?

There is some drone with this exhaust, but if you JUST got the muffler give it some time to break in. New exhausts are louder and need time to carbon up over the first 1000 miles of use.

Will what I posted help with the drone at all? I knew there was some with it but this seems like more then normal? Km not too technical with exhausts I apologize

If the exhaust was used then it is probably already broken in, and the price you paid was a steal! That is pretty characteristic of this exhaust to drone during that RPM range.

Assuming there are no leaks your ears just might be more sensitive to that frequency of noise. If they are I'd recommend selling it for a Thermal R&D exhaust. It features a helmholtz chamber which cancels out the bad sound frequencies and if you keep the stock front pipe with the header the overall dB is very nice for a street car.

Oh, I'd suggest give it some time - you will most likely get used to it -

If you're getting a header, I'd adjust your exhaust setup if drone bothers you. The TRD exhaust is known to drone at that RPM range and that's one of the reasons I personally avoided it. In my case I have 0 drone with a catless UEL and nameless axleback and downpipe combo. The downpipe replaces the factory overpipe and front pipe and makes it all one piece.

If you're doing a full exhaust I'd keep the catted UEL, but go with something like a nameless downpipe with helmholtz resonator and 2.5 inch axleback with 5 inch mufflers as the stock midpipe doesn't yield any gains when swapped out:
https://shop.namelessperformance.com...rpipe-brz-frs/

The stock midpipe contains it's own muffler/resonator as well. The thermal R&D exhaust someone else mentioned would be a good idea as well. Both use resonators to cut down on the drone frequencies.

If you like I can send a video of my exhaust setup, as it's got the setup I've mentioned, I believe with your catted UEL it'd be more tame.

If you have not done these yet, I would recommend a new donut gasket and using Permatex copper RTV in the other two joints before the muffler.

What mrg66 said as well, grimmspeed gaskets and high temp rtv killed any leaks I had in my header. It seems some aftermarket equipment has trouble mating properly in some cases.....

I had drone with a jdl catless headers, switched front pipe to hooker catted with helmholz resonator. It helped for sure. Still. Some base drone at 2k, but manageable.
