Based on my times with drag radials on an shit track my 0-60mph was 3.5ish seconds. I'll us my phone app and try on the street with the stock tires for fun

If you held the revs at say 1500 or so just so the car didn't bog when you dumped the clutch might be pretty close, if the auto just mashed the gas from a dig.

I don't think being in manual mode will help the 0-60 time in the auto. It should shift at redline just as fast under full throttle as it does in manual mode.

Drive safe.

No - the automatic is geared for fuel economy. 4th gear is 1:1 ratio in the 6AT, whereas 5th gear in the 6MT is 1:1.

The gear ratio is responsible for what rpm the engine is at, in a given gear at a given speed. So you can cruise at 60mph in 6th gear in the 6AT, and be turning less engine rpms than 6th gear in the 6MT. The ratio is torque multiplier - and the auto has less torque multiplication per gear.

Also, automatic transmissions tend to "eat" a bit of hp, so 200hp at the crank will lose more when it gets to the wheels of the 6AT than the 6MT.

Long story short - that's why the 6AT is a full second slower to 60, but also why it gets 4-5mpg better than the 6MT.

The new computer controlled lock up automatics are more efficient than a manual box because the planetary gearset uses less energy and the lockup clutch takes the torque converter out of loop.

The automatic could be quicker than the manual if the ratios were correct, but that would never do or a sportscar.

BMW now fits the ZF 8 spd automatic to many models because it is quicker and uses less fuel.

No it had to do with NOT being able to launch the auto from a dig

I agree. The AT will do 60 in second gear, saving a shift over the MT. Also, if I remember correctly the 5-60 rolling start times are similar. I believe with a decent launch control the AT would be much closer to the MT in 0-60, if not better.
