All-New 2022 Toyota 86 Reveal Delayed

fake news is saying its getting pushed back...

https://carbuzz.com/news/all-new-202...reveal-delayed

For how long? Read on.

The second-generation Subaru BRZ was officially unveiled last month and already we're hearing about a possible STI version. Fingers crossed. But what about its sister, the new Toyota 86? To date, Toyota has remained silent on the matter. According to Japanese website Mag-X, the automaker initially planned to reveal its new affordable sports coupe at the just-canceled 2021 Tokyo Auto Salon, originally scheduled for next month but that will now take place online.

However, sources claim Toyota isn't interested in doing an online-only reveal and aims to have some sort of in-person gathering. And thus the decision has supposedly been made to delay the 2022 86's debut by a full six months.

The hope is that between now and then the pandemic will be under better control thanks to the rollout of new vaccines. By late June or early July, that live debut event will likely be able to take place with far fewer restrictions. Toyota has not commented on the report and isn't expected to until later next week following the Christmas weekend.

it better not be true....whats the point of delaying this reveal when 90% of the car is already revealed with the BRZ?

And several months after the tokyo auto salon? so pretty much right before it heads to dealerships?

Other than creating more buzz, I don't see the delay as a big deal given the fact that the BRZ, and probably the 86, won't be in showrooms before October 2021.

I totally disagree with this comment: "TOYota is using Subu to iron out all the hiccups of the new vehicle. Buying time. So that by the time they do launch their 'version', there's less to go wrong once released on the public."

I would think that the 86 will enter production alongside the BRZ at the same time since why would Toyota agree to give up market share on the Gen2 to Subaru?

car brands are very myopic.

i've met plenty of people that would never buy a chevy, but are diehard gmc fans. or will buy a new buick, but never one of those 'foreign' cars, despite most of buick's line now being made outside the US, and most of the 'foreign' cars they despise being predominantly made in the US...

more than a few people look at me like i've got two heads when i try to tell them that my subaru is the same as a toyota.

the world at large looks at every brands product as a single, individual item, and rarely looks at the origins beyond.

This. Both cars will come out more or less at the same time. It will be based on the production schedule (which in turn will be influenced by Covid and parts supply etc). The 86 reveal can of course take place any time between then and now, and no doubt Toyota will try to find the most 'advantageous' time to do it from a marketing perspective.

That's hilarious, because in all ways that matter it is the same car.

Of course it will. Just like gen I. What do these people think is going to happen? Do they not realise the 'twins' are essentially the same car under the skin, made on the same production line with the same components by the same Subaru workers and robots, with only a few 'details' like front/rear bumpers, headlights, badges, interior trim bits, and maybe a few suspension setting adjustments to separate them?

TAS 2021 is now cancelled. Probably why the reveal has been delayed

That's understandable if they wanted to do an in-person reveal but does it really take 6 months to put together an event like Subaru did for the BRZ? I would think these journalists have a lot of pent up energy and would go anywhere at any time to get the scoop on a reveal.

I am seeing "dollars off" offers on Supra's in my area (New England). If Toyota is dealing with a glut of Supra's in inventory and they want impact for the GR86's fall 2021 availability, then delaying the launch until late spring (or even early summer) isn't unreasonable. As long as I know that it will be launched and not cancelled, I don't much care. I know what most of the details are.

That's not a problem for me since I'm not going to put down a deposit until I see/test drive one in the flesh.
