Seriously that thing was beat to shit on my is300 I just removed it and tossed it... nothing bad ever happened and that was 3 years ago.
From what I can tell from the drawing and pics it is a cover over a cover. It would stay broke until it caused other issues, fell off or I "wee'd" it if it was me.

But... duck tape has become the norm so much that there is an actual brand(and it's actually really good tape) making it technically correct. Once things are used widely enough they are accepted by the academic community as "real and proper". It's only a matter of time before DUCK tape is officially what it's called assuming it hasn't already
