Decided to join a Auto-X organization. Attending a membership meeting today with the first event being at a local Casino parking lot. Apparently you show up, get classed, get a loaner helmet, have fun. Super excited.

lol, those vent turn signals are one of my favorite features of the new western stars.

any chance you could get me a smaller western star badge, like the ones on the door panels?

i've grown tired of the ranger badge, and looking for something less mainstream...

back in may of last year i changed jobs. i was an electrician, but started butting heads with the boss too much for a variety of reasons. at one point he told me i was too slow and methodical, and he could easily hire two guys half my age that could each do twice the work in the time it currently takes me. so i called his bluff...

i had first looked for similar positions, but either i knew most of the other local companies and didn't want to deal with their crap, other alternates required far more training for the same pay, or the few other places were offering less pay for the same kind of work. i basically felt pinned to the wall-- either stay where i'm at and keep hearing how 'terrible' i am, get more training to work in a place i really didn't want to be anyways(filthy-dirty steel mills are always hiring and making big money, but outside all the time, or inside with the grime), or take a pay cut and move somewhere else doing the same thing all over again.

so i started looking into broader alternatives. my passion is low voltage electronics and vehicle modification, mostly lighting and audio, but car stereo system installation doesn't pay much, and starting entirely over to go back to school for a mechanic position is out of the question. i realized at some point in that searching that someone somewhere is building and selling all these customized municipal trucks and service bodies, so i started focusing on figuring out who/where does it...

officially, i believe my job title is 'mechanic'. i'm more of a 'finisher', where i focus on the electrical and completion work of the trucks. other guys will take the raw truck chassis and do all the cutting/alteration/welding of all the main parts.

all the trucks show up to me looking like this

i install the control systems inside the cab, marry the dump body and hydraulic systems to the truck chassis, and generally complete all the bits and pieces that finish the truck out before it gets shipped to the customer.

basically, a ton of wiring, measuring, drilling, and welding--the welding is new-ish, but the rest is really no different than what i was doing before with custom house remodels. but it's all indoors, on all new trucks--without rusty hardware. so in some ways, it's a step up from not needing to be out in the weather all the time.

That's pretty cool, taking a naked truck like that and helping with its transformation. I think I do remember you mentioning some issues with your previous electrical job. Glad you left that other position. Places don't realize how ungrateful they are until they lose a good employee.
