Ca. Smog requirements

I'm curious to know if anyone in Calif.has put a full catted exhaust, with a tune, on their car and has had any problem getting it passed by the smog station. I'm currently considering this for my '17 BRZ but don't want to spend the money on these items if I can't drive it.

If you bought your car new in California then you don't have to worry about it for 6 years.

On newer cars, they simply plug the OBDII tester in, and if the ECU says all it good then you're done.

Sometimes, they do a visual inspection and a dyno test to evaluate rolling emissions. I don't know what flags the more detailed inspection, but the last 3+ smog tests on 2000ish+ vehicles have been simple OBDII checks. They never even opened the hood.

There are currently no federally legal aftermarket emissions control systems.

They extended it from 6 years to 8 years now. However for the last 2 years you will pay a slightly higher renewal fee.

I would say no, but I'm guessing. TRD intake is CARB approved and has sound tube delete.

Thank you folks for all the quick and concise responses. I had forgotten about the 6/8 year smog rules.....let's see, that would make me either 84 or 86 years old and I will probably not be zipping around like I do now.

I would actually guess technically yes it need to be reinstalled. The TRD is CARB so things like that can be changed. But not from OEM. Now if they notice is another thing.

I was talking to a smog tech in our local group who said there are shops that would fail me for the catch cans being in the engine bay, even if they aren't connected. That seemed like some BS but who knows.
