Reload this Page 2014 FRS with 56K kms, Odd transmission issue.

I'm hearing a faint sort of whining sound during cold starts,

When the clutch is pressed in, the noise goes away, when I take my foot off, it comes back.

After a quick drive, the noise goes away. quick restart, the noise is not there.

It comes and goes from day to day, the car is out of warranty period.

Shifts gears without an issue, no odd noises

That's your throw out bearing going bad. It's common with the earlier editions. I had to replace mine around 66K miles (106K kilometers).

The tob doesn't heal itself. The noise will get worse. From experience

I changed mine when i could hear a slight rattle in gear driving at parking lot speeds as well as that whining sound at idle that goes away when you clutch in. This was maybe at 45-50k miles. It really wasn't that bad and probably had a couple 10s of thousands of miles left in it tbh. Just not something you want to explode while you're driving.

@Tcoat how did someone let it get that bad. how does one not notice, oh my honks and rattles has turned into a squeal and a grind, and the smell of burning? Gee.

It really didn't sound that bad. Then it stopped making noise completely. Then it went BANG. Had a squeal but no honks, rattles or grinding and no burning until it totally let go. Felt and operated just fine. Hindsight is wonderful but at that time we didn't even really know they were an issue yet. I knew it was going but honestly the symptoms were so mild that I had no idea it was going so fast and decided to wait until my next service appointment. It was a dumb move and I have preached the "do it now" gospel ever since.

here is a video, its hard to hear because it is soo subtle, but pretty much as described, a faint whining noise during cold starts, goes away when clutch is pressed in, also goes away after warms up or some driving. Thank you for your replies

I had a friend who is a mechanic come by, and he suggested that it is normal, and might be just my flywheel sound

it's very subtle and goes away after cold start, or a short drive. It happens only when the engine is cold starting, even though the weather is warm outside. for example, on a normal day, in the morning when i drive my car, a fresh start, the noise occures. but after a short drive to the coffee shop, the next start no noise at all.

the car shifts fine pulls good. no weird sounds when releasing the clutch while changing gears etc... no rattle, just that tiny whine.

Here's mine. Tcoat's driven it. Used transmission - zero change for 40 Kmi. I've had worse for much longer. Like we discussed, just be nice to it. No gearbox is indestructible but this one is particularly sensitive to abuse.

Thanks a lot for the video, my car pretty much sounds like this. If it is the input shaft bearing, I have a 3rd party mechanical insurance that would cover this. But they require a diagnostic before approving any work. I have an appointment with the dealer for the diagnostic, any information I should give to the tech? I don't want them to diagnose it as TOB since it seems like that it is NOT the case.

Also, can you elaborate a little on being nice to the transmission? Sorry still new to this stuff. Thank you for the information.

No wheelhop-inducing burnouts, flat-foot shifts, blah blah... Anything that would induce chatter in the drive line.
