Smile Road Trip to Mount Washington and Portland

Hey guys! Hoping I could get a little bit of help. I'm trying to plan a road trip to go up the Mount Washington Auto Road, as well as Portland.

I live in a Small town right between Ottawa and Montreal. This is my first "major" road trip so any and all help is appreciated. I'm trying to make this a 2 day trip, maybe three. It's going to be next Monday and Tuesday, the 22nd and 23rd, I could possibly leave on the Sunday though.

I'd like some route suggestions, as well as attractions to visit. Not so much tourist traps, but fun stuff. For the route, I'd like to avoid boring highways as much as possible. My idea was to head to Portland starting Monday morning, making stops along the way, and staying someplace in or around Portland that night. Then Tuesday head up to Mount Washington and head home.

I don't really have a fixed budget, but I would like to keep the trip as cheap as possible while seeing and doing as much as I can. For example I'm not paying for a $200 hotel room.

Any and all ideas are welcome, and thank you in advance

In Portland(I'm assuming Maine), will probably be the most expensive. There are a few decent motor lodges in the area. I'm about 40 minutes up the coast from Portland. As far as attractions go, they are all tourist traps. Luckily this time of the year the amount of tourists is going down.

If you don't want to do highways I'd suggest using roads like rt5 in NH, then down to 3 to the Concord area. From their cross into Maine in the Portsmouth/Kittery area. Portland isn't far via 95, but you can jump on rt1 if you want. As far as your day goes I'd be surprised if you did more then that. I'm guessing that's an 8 hour drive.
