Yeah I'm a little confused. But I will say this is Toyota puts out a targa top 86, I'm sold!
After reviewing the link, I'm more curious... will the hybrid motor fix the torque dip? |

Admittedly I skipped the link, but I'm confused. Is this meant to be an automatic or manual transmission? The center console shows buttons (I think) for the usual automatic settings, but the shifter actually has the 1-6 gears printed on it.

Automatic with a "6-speed manual-style driving with H-pattern shifting." Seems pretty interesting, but I don't see a clutch pedal which would make it even cooler to me.

I found a first draft of the keynote presentation.
"Neo Functionalism" concept was the idea we implemented all along the design process of the current 86. For the next generation we refined it. Ladies and gentlemen we are proud to present you the car that embodies our new concept. The GR HV Sports: "No Functionalism". As the current generation 86 we added steering wheel controls (to give you a safer car), then we removed the paddle shifters. You will experience a new dimension of unsafety you never dreamed possible in a car with an automatic transmission or an automated manual transmission. The 3 most common complaints about the current 86 are: the torque dip, not enough power and the mobile phone cubbyhole on cars with start button is too small. For these reasons we decided to remove the cubbyhole. SOME people think the 86 is a slow car. We thought "What can we do so that ALL people can think the next 86 is a slow car?". We added a big battery and that was really promising (the car was slower), then we added a hybrid system (to act as an excuse for battery presence), but the car started to be fast. That was unacceptable. Our engineers worked day and night until they found a solution. We decided to chop off the roof and subsequently we added a huge chunk of steel inside the car to strengthen the chassis. Now our car is slower than your grandparents. We know you are thinking "But my sports car regulation doesn't allow convertibles and targa top to compete". Don't worry. We are really confident that some North Korean scientist will sooner or later blow up a laboratory and the whole laboratory's city and the whole country and the entire Korean peninsula and Japan and maybe you too. |

Well since it is just a render and the concept renders are usually way over the top compared to the production version it is probably a safe bet that those lights will go away. Far to costly parts for the price point they would be expected to want to hit. Unfortunately the targa will probably go the same route.
