16 year old should be given a 1990 Honda Accord with 189,000 miles on it like I was given. At 18, I proved I could drive then I got a 1997 Firebird Formula, LT-1 V8.

Now that I'm older, I look back and understand exactly why my parents did it. Sure, I could have gotten the Firebird first, but they wanted me to build the trust up first.

My 13 year old grandson is currently saving money to buy my car when it is trade in time in 3 more years. I made the deal that I will sell it to him for what ever the dealer says the trade in value is. Since it will have very high mileage that won't be a lot.
The result will be, a 16 year old with a rather inexpensive but well maintained 4 year old car. I don't really need his money but am reluctant to just give it too him as he then misses out in the life lesson that nothing in the world is free. OP seems to understand this concept at this point at any rate.

You're in for a world of fun. If you were in OH, I'd gladly help you get started. Instead, go to SCCA.com and use the tool there to find out your local region. Email the contact and they should be happy to help you get started.

As a fellow young driver, I can give you some insight on this. I am 18 and recently received my 86 when I was 17...Yes from my parents. Please don't get the impression that I am some spoiled brat that gets everything handed down to them, I appreciate what I have and am grateful for such a gift and the honor to have such a great car. My parents gave me the car as a gift for maintaining an above 4.00 gpa.

Now on to the stuff you want to hear. I agree the car needs more power, but is that power necessary at your age? I know for me it's not. I don't know enough about cars to handle such power. I enjoy the car as is with its awesome handling abilities. This car is meant for canyon carving, not straight line acceleration. I would love to just slap on a turbo and call it a day, yet it's just not that simple; it requires expertise and a well understanding of how the FA20 engine works...something I haven't completely acquired yet.

When I was 16, my dad brought me to an autox and I did a few runs in his Porsche 911, then drove it back home. I turned out ok and my driving never murdered anyone.

The Scion FRS is a great car for young drivers. It's fun, efficient, and most importantly safe. Let's be honest, if your parents could afford to buy you a car like the FRS as your first car, wouldn't you take them up on the offer? Or would you tell them "nah I need to learn a lesson in humility. Please give me a shitbox instead"? I absolutely disagree with everyone on here who says the FRS is too much for a new driver to handle. You can just as easily kill yourself everyone around you in a minivan.

Parents buying new cars for their kids isn't some spoiled brat 1%er nonsense either. Many middle-class workin' folk like you and me do it for their kids too.

Of course I would take them up on the offer. When you're 16 and think you own the world when you get behind the wheel, you don't know any better. Last thing I would want is a teenager driving a sports car like a bat out of hell their first year of driving with peer pressure from friends to do stupid crap. Less likely to do any of that with a safe, more boring Honda Accord or Civic, or a Toyota.

It really comes down to the money. The FR-S isn't exactly a cheap first car for a 16 year old once you factor in that insurance. If your parents have money, then all of this is irrelevant. If your parents are working middle class, and work hard for what they can provide you, then you will get a great life lesson out of appreciating what is given to you first, then better things will happen later. Work hard, set goals for what you want, and make it happen. That's how I grew up. It's hard to put yourself in the OP's shoes until you have lived that life.

There's no reason for a 16 year old to have their own brand new car. There are some exceptions. If someone was given a goal and worked hard and saved their money I can see helping them get a new car if that is what they want. Or if they're working a job and you get it for them with them making their own payment and/or insurance.

That teaches them responsibility. For a parent to just buy their kid a new car when they're sixteen because they can does that kid a disservice. You just put another entitled shit bag in the world.

Should re-title it to "Life Lessons Brought To You By Good Parenting"

Or "Deep Thoughts"

Time have changed.

So, is there now a tuning solution so we can get sustained power increase with bolt-ons with Calif's crappy 91 octane? What are they? OFT?
The Motoiq seems to blame the gas not the tuning platform. But if the knock can be tuned out, that would be great.

Ecutek will sustain the power. As they've dug deeper into the ECU, they've figured out what is needed to keep the ECU from "fighting back".

I kinda agree with this and kinda don't. I do agree with if they are paying for it by working, then yes, as a parent, I would probably subsidize their spending power. If they were to default on the payment, then I'd "repo" the car and not let them drive it. Great life lesson opportunity.

I do think a new car is better than an old, cheap car. You cannot put a price on safety, and modern cars are safer than older cars.

I've had a thought for a long time, that when the time comes, I'd get my kid a WRX, but literally just bleed off all the boost, so that it's effectively NA. Why? Because the WRX is one of the safest cars you can get at a reasonable price. It also allows for me to monitor if the car is being used responsibly. When the time is right, the boost can always slowly be added back.

Strange coming from me, cuz when I was 16, I dgaf about cars, but given the things that my friends and I did back then, we're lucky nobody got hurt.
