Steering rack options?

Is there a steering rack that fixes the inconsistent boost issues at the track?

How bad is it? I found too much caster make it horrible and the power steering turns on and off. I still get it every now and then without additional caster but it's not all the time.

I've has the power steering cut out for a split second during regular driving conditions and even in parking lots. Has happened twice in like the past month. Feels really unnerving. I believe I'm on stock alignment settings. Interested to hear if there is a solution to this.

On sticky Trofeo Rs its multiple turns per lap at the Ridge Motorsports Park!

I can live with it, but sure wish I didn't have to.

What is your caster at?

Oh I had a huge problem with shutting off under trail braking (at least 3 turns a lap). It does make it hard to drive a consistent line when you go from barely holding the whee to straight up man handling it! I just run OEM caster now. It has been dramatically reduced but on occasion I still get it.

Yes, trail braking and highly cambered turns!

I thought I'd read that the new cars don't have the problem so I was hoping some might have tried changing to the newer rack, if indeed they are different.

It has less to do with the rack and more to do with the power steering, iirc speculation was that it was hot and/or overloaded shutting down to prevent damage to the unit.

If you get under the car the rack is just a straight rack and pinion, the power assist lives behind the dashboard connecting to the steering wheel shaft before it enters the steering rack. If there's an improved unit it'll be that.

Changing the rack itself won't help the problem, maybe if you change the ratio that could lighten the load on the EPS, but you'll have lighter steering feel and require more steering input to get the wheel turned the same amount. And no guarantee the power steering system will coordinate happily with the new ratio, it could go haywire.

Good info out of Element Tuning that increased caster worsens the effect which feeds into the overloading/overheating theory. Maybe that was known before but I don't recall.

Hypothetically, yes. I don't know what it does to the traction control system as a whole though, you might lose ABS, there have been a couple threads on it but I don't recall anything conclusive.

How about reducing electric assist, so that the motor doesn't overheat? Sounds so doable...

Sounds like adding heatsinks and/or a small fan might help.
