Remember when you put 16's on and same height tire the gear ratio will go to true 4.11 and with stock 17's it comes out to 4.03 I believe. So be prepared for a slight increase in RPM and decrease in MPG. But with 16's you get a nicer pull off the line and through 4th gear. That's the main reason I'm going 16's. Some put on 18's and wonder why their cars are slower...lol

How do you figure that? If overall diameter is the same, wouldn't it keep the same revolutions per minute or second or whatever it's measured by for the wheel?

"same height tire" means that overall diameter is not kept same.

It's less rotational mass. I've tried a few calculators and the results are the same. This is also a trick back in the day to keep the effective gearing true. Though the difference is negligible about 2% effective gear ratio. Looking back it's a change from 4.05 to 4.10 so not much. But possibly a placebo effect calculates also. In the end getting a lighter smaller diameter wheel and slightly less diameter tire does do something to the effective gear ratio.

Here's a calculator

Getting a smaller wheel does nothing to the gear ratio. Getting a smaller diameter tire will lower the overall final drive. But none of this has to do with rotational mass; it's pure gearing. Lowering rotational mass will improve performance as if you had geared more aggressively, but it will do nothing to your rpms at given speed, and if anything, your mileage will improve a negligible amount.

Yep, tru, I stand corrected

EDIT: Well, I thought it was stamped on the outside part of the wheel, but it's not. I remember seeing it somewhere though...I'm swapping out for my winter setup this weekend, so I'll take a closer look.

Finally got the wheels swapped this afternoon...load rating is stamped on the inside of the rim...1100lbs. A bit less than I recall..

Unfortunately, the list of high performance 16" tires (excluding DOT race tires with treadwear ratings under 100) in a width suitable for an 8.5" rim is almost nonexistent...

I'm kinda over my high-profile 205s on 7-inch wheels. The sidewall tends to roll over and play dead. I need either 195/55R16, or some 16x7.5s.

Man, no one makes decent 16 x 7.5 in 5x100 with +40ish offset.

Except! Volk CE28 Racing Scholarship model comes in fitments offered by no other Volk Racing wheel, at like 80% the price. Convert to USD (The yen is super weak right now) and add some shipping, and you get rare JDM Volks for $1500.

Limited production, unfortunately. Either way: Everyone buy these immediately.

(other finalists include RPF1s, Gazoo Enkei RS05s, or, strictly for comedy, Sparco Assetto Gara in fuchsia.)

See my list in post #437 plus the additional input from a few members after it. it sucks that manufacturers are going away from 16" wheels. A lot of them will have a full range of diameters from 14" to 20+" but they skip 16" for some reason...
