I would be more open to buy a hot hatch like the Golf GTi or the R or a performance sedan like the WRX STI , than the GR Corolla or the GR Yaris. At least the aforementioned cars have a well established history and they are not based on a 3-cyl engine

I tried convince myself to buy a Hawkeye in 2006, after I graduated college. But I would have had to sell my sportbike.

At 23-24 I couldn't have afforded insurance on both.

To me the 3 cylinder is a nice change from the sea of 4 pots we have. The GR yaris was named the highest output production 3 cylinder. Sounds better than a lot of 4 cylinder cars too. I would love to own a GR yaris or corolla.

Do you really see the cylinders? If this really matters to you and want to stand out, why not going to a 5-cyl engine like the one in the Audis? A highest output production 3-cyl doesn't say much to me. There aren't really many 3-cyl engines and you can boost enough the engine to get "nice" numbers. Driving a 3-cyl 1.5lt engine in city is another story ...

I dont really see the point in asking if I see the 3 cylinders. Do you see the four cylinders in car x? No one does unless theyre doing a valve cover gasket or something or another. All I was saying is, for me, a 3 cylinder engine is fun and unique, especially when it has the highest output. Just a nice tidbit fact for said fun engine layout.

It’s part of the reason I like the boxer in the fa20/24. It’s not a typical inline 4 we see in 99% of cars sold. Engineers are always dealing with pros and cons of any engine design so seeing them step out of their comfort zone and *successfully* design a 3 cylinder, a boxer, an inline 5, etc, is great to see! I love to see it.

Honestly what makes engines of aforementioned cars any better than G16E-GTS ? Being another VW derivative engine / dinosaur of an engine, having one more cylinder ?
This internet "yuck only 3-cylinders" talk is all over the forums but I bet that you won't find it in any review from people who actually drove one. I know guys who swapped their STIs, Focus RSs and even e92 M3 for GR Yaris and none of them was complaining about missing one or more of cylinders nor G16E-GTS being pos. I encourage you to drive one and than share your opinion once again

When I was living in UK I went to talk to Toyota about this car and I wasn't impressed. I had already in the past a small-engine turbo car and I wasn't excited about the "wait wait wait" feel to get the boost. Then I left and went to buy second time from Subaru a BRZ '21 model.

Actually this engine hits full boost quicker than FA20 comes out of dip hole so you might like it in the end.

I kinda liked the GR Yaris. And I wouldn't doubt it is closer to 300hp than 260hp.

Same old issue though, by the time you start having fun in such a capable car, you're looking at jail time :p

Do you have the '17 BRZ model? Unfortunately, we didn't get all the updates in Europe. The shorter final drive ratio (4.3) and the updated intake manifold and header. Car was more fun and peppy with these changes and new FA24 engine is even more alive and torquey as well. But yes nothing beats up the feel of a turbo boost, although it is not to all peoples tastes. Some like it, some not.

I do have 17' EU spec 6-speed but with ACE A350 tuned by Maptek (EcuTek Master Tuner)over here in Poland. I can tell you that without torque dip and added low end torque car feels fantastic right now. Fun fact: I can also drive my BRZ faster around the same track than I can GRY (Yaris on PS4S and BRZ on old heat-cycled PS4 225/40R18 vs 225/45R17 for BRZ)
I hope I get to test drive new GR86 next year but I'd be suprised if I ever decide to upgrade from my current BRZ. I just like it too much to let it go.
