transmission fluid with less whine?

Hi people,

I've been running on motul gear 300 on my transmission since last september. Driven around 10000 km (or 60k miles) with the new fluid.

The car shifts fine, and it's been through sub -30 C too. But sometimes I wish it was a little bit less whinny. I know it's well normal for the car, but I was wondering if there is any other fluid that's a little bit quieter.

The whine is not loud at all, and I can only hear it when it's under load in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th (it should whine in 6th, but I never notice it), as it should be that way. I just remember seeing a post somewhere on the forum mentioning that the factory fluid is thicker and a new fluid might whine a bit more... I might be completely wrong on this regard. With that said, I can't remember what it was like with the factory fluid since I was new to the car and replaced the fluid only after a few weeks I bought the car.

Thank you.

Well now, suppjc, I'd suggest you do an experiment. Switch back to the OEM fluid and see how you like it -

Thank you for your comment on this lonely thread

I guess I was wondering if someone has tried a few different fluids including the Motul one and others. As of now, everything works fine as is, but when the time comes, I might consider the OEM fluid or any other popular brands.

Well, allow me to put you in touch with our MT specialist, ol @Ultramaroon .

If he replies, keep in mind, it's over 105 degrees F down there and he just may be in one of his cranky moods -

As far as my 2013 FRS MT, it has the same fluid in it that came with the car. My transmission makes no noise at all - of course, I don't hear too good anymore -

The whine's not from fluid. It's because the transmission took a whack or many. Probably the input shaft bearing. I've told my story a few times here. Was dіcking around with mine and started some wheel hop. Immediately noticed a bit of the telltale whine. Pulled it a few weeks later to prep it for repair, and installed another salvage transmission. Immediately was WAY worse. I said "Fuck it. Let's see how it holds up." That was like five years ago. No change at all. One of these days I'll get around to swapping them again and inspecting the beater transmission.

Unless it's really awful, I wouldn't sweat it. Just be careful about abusing it. They're pretty fragile.

It's definitely not awful. I can hear it when it's on throttle (especially a partial throttle), but once it's doing a hard pull, the engine noise and other interior rattle overwhelm it. Since I changed the fluid last year, I notice pretty much zero difference in how it whines, so I think it will hopefully hold up as is. When I looked up the transmission whine on the forum, some say it's normal for the car, and I was wondering if they had a different fluid other than the OEM or Motul. I'll be careful not to abuse it for sure.

Thanks for sharing.

ps. my friend described it was like a super charger ha

Supercharger sound is a perfect description. :/

Looking forward to it! One thing I was sure it was gear whine is that on 5th gear, there is zero whine I can speak of in any condition.. and also I can't hear it in 6th. It might be because my lower gears have seen more abuse over time, who knows. I'm the second owner, so again I'll be careful with it

Do you have any stiffer bushings or inserts on your car? The slight supercharger whine is exactly how I’d describe the sound after putting in the Whiteline positive shift kit (trans bushing insert). Most noticeable in lower gears.

I appreciate your thought process here. You clearly understand the mechanics involved and applied it effectively in your diagnosis. It's a rare talent.

Mine is bone stock bought used. When I changed the tranny fluid, I didn't notice anything special about the bushings, so it's most likely stock busings.

My whine might be slightly quieter than what is on the video, compared to the engine noise, but that sound is there.

Thanks.

My 2014 sounds the same after having installed the Whiteline Positive Shift kit (and MTEC shifter springs, which I don't expect has an effect on the sound). I installed the Whiteline kit at the same time I replaced my flywheel and clutch and thought for sure it was something to do with those components, but it seems like that may not be the case. Also, I switched over from OEM to Motul gear oil at the same time.

Personally, I kinda like the new gear whine because it helps me imagine I'm driving a WEC LMP1 car
