First Post - Big Issue

I think I am posting in the right place... I'll get to the point. Bought a 2014 Scion FRS with a bad engine. I knew going in that the engine had some pretty bad knock, I've attached a video link. I figure it's a bent rod or some other damaged internals, but wanted to know if any of you guys have had the same experience. For reference, the guy told me he was going 90-100 mph, came off the highway and heard the knocking. I checked the oil when I got back and it was basically black, metal shavings, as expected. Maybe a damaged piston and a bent rod? Noise sounds from the bottom left area. Thanks in advance.

The rod bearings seem to be the common culprit, but of course it should be disassembled to be sure. Hope you will find a solution and enjoy the car.

Yep, you bought a car with a bad engine fer sure -

Several things could have come unglued. As said, you won't know till you take it apart - even then, you may not be sure -

Most likely the engine spun a rod bearing.

I reckon you can either rebuild the engine or install a rebuilt engine. It's expensive either way -

I'll ol @Ultramaroon for you, for his wise crack. In his defense, he is getting up in years and his "mood swings" seem to be getting more frequent -

In all fairness he does have a 14 not an early 13. Although the 14s do have a handful of reported failures and he may not be the "first" he is in a pretty exclusive club.
There are three possibilities and one probability (my personal guess) with a post 13 car.

Somebody opened up the engine for some reason and screwed up the sealant a'la the 2013 failures. This would be easy to identify if the pan is dropped and there are bits of sealant in the pickup screen.

The car was low on oil and the previous owner took one to many curves while doing "90 to 100MPH" on the highway. Spun bearing (probably #4)

The car had the wrong oil, a bad tune or some other modification. Least likely since in the picture it appears bone stock now but who knows what was done to it. Oh and that engine bay is a mess. My FRS wasn't pretty bad but was better than that even after 6 Canadian winters.

And where I will place my bets
Money shift and slightly bent a rod, broke a spring or blew out a valve. Hard to tell in an 8 second video but that doesn't sound like a spun bearing to me. Loads of tick but no real grind or rattle.

As said it will need to be opened up and looked at but may not be totally destroyed.

Rebuild or drop in a used motor. Or swap it but you're looking at big money for that

I had a 13 and knocking (not that bad) and sold it rather than fix it

Good luck but you are probably looking at putting in a new (or used) engine.

Hope you didn't pay too much

I appreciate it. Will be opening up on the weekend, but I think I'm leaning towards a bent road and other damage as well. At least I got it for cheap, so I'm chilling.
