I'm surprised there's not more obvious improvement. It must be more a matter material choice and internal structure. Cannot believe they're still using plastic on the inside though!

Maybe I'll cut both in half to see if there are differences internally... The TSB states different grease which honestly sounds like it could solve the issue since the bearing degrade. The plastic seems to only overheat once the bearing is going.
IMO, the plastic is to protect the transmission snout. Plastic (w/ a bit of grease) on an aluminum input snout *should* last longer than say, aluminum on aluminum. Granted, the plastic will wear quicker than aluminum; but I'd rather replace a $25 TOB vs. the crank snout (IIRC, they're $120ish). And we're lucky we can actually change that part! Some Subaru transmissions it is part of the casting and it cannot be replaced. Eric |

That would be impressive if the difference was just about the grease. I'm curious to see if you do cut them open. Having had a premature TOB failure on the way home from picking up my new-to-me 13 FR-S, it's a subject that has my attention.
I get your point on the plastic. I had considered that. The plastic likely will hold up fine as long as the throw out bearing does its job correctly. Still, there are plenty of cars with no plastic sleeve that have no problems being all metal and I think a correctly chosen metal would make a higher quality part. It may be that as of now the plastic sleeves have only failed due to excessive heat associated with a bearing failure, but if the updated bearings don't fail so early we may well see the sleeves failing first due to repeated heat cycles if the clutches and throw out bearings are lasting 100k or more like they do on many cars. Too soon to say though. |

I replaced the snout. Mine was worn. See my build pics. It was like $83-93. Apparently it is just the temperature characteristics of the oil that was changed.

I mean that's not really surprising. The part still has to fit all of the other parts. They can't completely redesign it without changing more parts on the vehicle. So the solution is internal improvements and material changes, as you mentioned.

I just swapped mines out..
The old one from my car looked pretty identical to the new #30502AA150 part. No real differences it seems, besides the white dot. |

Looks different to me. The metal stamping has a bulge ring around the center near the seal vs the old one when it just slops down to the seal. That and a few other things.
