I am now officially without a car and waiting to see how long we wait while contemplating the beater option or just getting a big discout on a current gen and slap a header and a tune on it.

Aaaah to dream . . .

The FA20 in NA form barely meets Euro 6 as is, and Europe even missed out on the extra manual HP bump of the 2017 refresh because of it. From an OEM power/emissions perspective there is little room left in the NA FA20, particularly if the goal is for the 2nd gen to be able to meet any new emissions targets and keep selling through to 2030 or so (i.e. similar life cycle to 1st gen).

The most convincing 'rumour' I've seen so far is a NA version of the FA24. The displacement bump to 2.4L gives the engineers some room to increase HP whilst still having a hope of meeting ever tighter emissions and economy targets for the next decade or so. If I was a betting man I would put my money on it being the NA FA24 (even if my heart hopes they put the turbo FA24 in, or even a screaming flat 6 ala the old Caymans!).

If I remember correctly, there was an official version in Germany that produces about 230hp for an one-type racing. So 230hp is really not big deal for Toyota.
It is a bigger deal to do it with OEM reliability in a street legal car whilst meeting all the fuel economy and emissions requirements, whilst still keeping price reasonable. Racecars (and cars tuned aftermarket) don't count since they don't have to worry about these things.

Back in 2016 I think it was I went to a Toyota dealer award night and happened to get talking to the CEO of Toyota Australia and he said that the next gen 86 would get a bigger displacement motor so maybe he wasn't just spinning me a line

The Japan only super limited run GRMN 86 only made 216hp from the FA20 N/A.

So they're really going to need to do something drastic in the engine department for the new 86/BRZ if they want to get it into the 230-250hp range.

The FA20 isn't my favorite engine (even if its a high revver) So I hope they don't limit themselves to just the boxer as the only way they're looking to go.

If Subaru is still involved (which has been confirmed), you can guarantee that it's going to come with a boxer motor of some sort. I'd place my bets on an evolution of the FA series. I think an FA22 with 220hp euro emissions compatible is probably what it'll get. It makes the most sense in today's emissions environment. Hard to see it go turbo from the get go, it would cannibalize a lot of wrx sales.

Many places outside the US tax on displacement.
Anything over 2 liters = mondo luxury motor taxes.

1.8L Turbo Boxer-4 seems to be a great option as well. It already makes 266hp in JDM Levorg.

Ah... 1.8??? I thought it was a 170 h.p 1.6L or the optional 296 h.p. 2.0.L.
Please, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Yeah my bad. 1.8L was speculated engine for next gen WRX and Levorg. You’re right, Levorg has 1.6 and FA20 2.0 that already makes 300hp.

No you’re right, the Levorg can have a turbocharged 1.6L FB16 or turbocharged 2.0L FA20 H4

New 86/ BRZ may or may not have more competition from the new Z.

Ivan Espinosa (Corporate VP of global and Japan product planning at Nissan) says a new Z is coming next year. Might be called the 400Z. No roadster.

https://www.motortrend.com/news/next...ing-2020-400z/

I'm wondering if they will go after the Mustang and Challenger with the next car, especially with the comments about it being possible to target higher volumes. In base form, with a usable back seat and the VC-Turbo motor for around $30K, it could do well.

Could they price it that low though?
I think the starting price for the 350Z when it first arrived was a fair bit higher than that.
