Hey @humfrz, last weekend, my wife and I had breakfast at Cocos in monterey. I'm looking at the menu and I see chicken fried steak and eggs, $14.95. Then I see it again for 8.95? Yes,55+ menu! I ask the waitress what's the difference, and she says nothing. My first 55+ score!

Yes!

I always look on the menu for the 55+ section, sometimes called the senior section. Sometimes the portions are a bit smaller, but we don't need all that unhealthy food anyways -

Looks like Noblis takes round 1. With honorable mentions to Wannacry for persistence and Sage for a multilingual interface. Also take note of the sheer number of UDP connections.
Wow, that UI. Busy busy

All this talk about raises reminds me of the time I got appointed to a position as manager of regulatory affairs a large company. Now the problem was that the promotion was a two level jump on the pay scales. The problem was that the old conservative companies guidelines couldn't give me more of a raise than to put me at the top of the next level's pay scale.

How did I fix that? Since in my group of about fifteen people, I had four senior scientists. Since they were outstanding performers, I got them BIG raises -

How did that help me? Well, the scientists were paid on a different scale than management was. So, when the Director of Research found out that I had several people working for me, that were making more money than me - he had to give me a raise -

In terms of raises, here's the dirty little secret you may not know unless you've been on the dark side....

In most moderate to above sized established company it is most likely your boss has very little control over the size of the raise you get. It is usually determined by a set budget and a distribution based on evaluation scores.

I have worked for 7 companies in 4 different industries, ranging from 2,000 to 70,000 employees and they all did it on some variation of that theme. In some, the manager had a "range" which gave some flexibility but the department still had a budget number they could meet (say 3% of salary). In others, the % was calculated based on the review score distribution against budget. The peak of the bell curve got budget, left of the curve got less or nothing, right of the curve got budget + whatever was given up by left of the curve (money has to come from somewhere).

In most cases your manager is probably just as frustrated by the whole process as you are.

This is accurate for my company as well. There's a whole smoke and mirrors system in place to hide it, but lower management just tells us how it works anyway.

Yeah... Thankfully the shenanigans that pops up over the desktop doesn't happen when you're actually using it. Although we typically don't run a half dozen different types of ransomware at once either.

Encryption notification is the last thing to happen in those particular variants, so first to throw it up won. Of all of our playing around, Annabelle is the most brutal. It usually encrypts the others in addition to the files, forces a reboot, and then gets pretty creepy with the encryption notice.

This is kind of the reaction I was expecting when posting that link given the subject matter:
