Tires for FI 86

Greetings,

I will be moving to FI soon, and my power goal is ~275whp. This is my daily, I want it to be a good street car, and I'm wanting to know which tire setup you guys recommend running as far as best bang for my buck. I'm just running a super cheap set of burners right now (my last set were bad off) that I got to hold me over until it was time to go FI. (Federal SS595 is what I'm currently on).

Do you guys think these tires are even worth bothering to try on an 86 making that power? I dont mind breaking traction at the bottom of second, but breaking traction at 3rd too would suck (if its just chirping a bit thats okay).

I'm curious what you guys run, I know a ton of people run MPSS but I personally don't wanna spend that much on a tire that I'm not gonna track.

With similar power level, I changed the tires to Yokohama Advan 225/45-17 with stock wheels. It was still too playful, almost at an unsafe level. The traction control was not able to act quick enough. Especially when starting from red light to turn either direction, I had to be extra careful. After upgrading to 245/40-17 with 17x8 wheels, traction is at a safe level now and traction control is functioning normally. I have General G-Max AS tires.

go on tire rack and sort tires by size, 225 is for 8's, 255's are for 9 or 9.5's. id keep it narrower bc wide tires are fun-killing and heavier. if you were a serious track rat, id say go 17x9, but the fact that you asked this, id say a 8 wide wheel with a 225 will be perfect for you, as it was exactly what i had and was perfect. UHP summers are the bread and butter category for sport summer tires. ive never known someone to "accidentally" spin out in the middle of an intersection, trying to make a turn (other than snow), people daily 1,000whp R8's for crying out loud, youre not going to get yourself into trouble.

yeah, id go with a 225 UHP Summer, undoubtedly the best bang for the buck.

Which Advan's? There are around 12+ listed in passenger car category on tire rack. The Advan AO52 is RE71R level. AD08R's are supposed to be pretty damn good too.

Advan Sport A/S+, those are all seasons. I don't buy summer tires since they don't last as long and they do more hydroplaning under heavy rain in our northeast area compared to all seasons. But the traction of 225 summers would have been enough probably for FI. I can also get away with all seasons in the beginning of winter before switching to winter tires. So, 245 all seasons are more practical for me.

There is some good info in the prior posts. You have a lot of great options. But if you truly want the best bang for your buck in a summer street tire, I'm skeptical you'll find anything better than the GT Radial SX2.

But seriously, the value there is outrageous. They aren't the fastest tire in the group, but I think they are exactly what you're looking for. And there are plenty of people in this community that have a ton of successful experiences with them.

With 225/45/17x8 i feel im ok, running PS4S tires. Although yeah traction control can kick in sometimes higher up in the rev range in 1st of 2nd gear. Most of the time it's fine and im not hurting for traction. Can light the tires up pretty good in 1st gear if you want to though if you disable TC.

Better for your tires to slip than to lose an axle
