Yea, because our downstairs HVAC unit is in the basement below grade it has a sump pump for that purpose and the alarm is definitely not cute.

The way heat tape works is not to melt all the snow or ice off, but to form small warm paths for the water to get off of the roof. That way there is no dam formed, and water will not backup and get into the house.
The term dam is very accurate as the water melts, moves down the roof then refreezes over the cooler eves forming the dam and water is held back, moves up under the shingles and into the house.

They need to be properly installed or they will not work.
Had a man down the street ask me to take a look at his as he was still getting water inside. Turned out the installer who said he knew what he was doing ,did not.

edit heated helmets will not stop dams from forming, only melts the water on top and may let it gat down the drain.
I have the tapes/cables in Wi and in Mi. They work!

TIL a lot of manufacturing companies haven't jumped on 3D printers for rapid prototyping. I don't get it, I have a small one and have rp'd a bunch of our parts to verify fit. I am trying to pull the trigger on new tooling for a vacuumed formed part and they can't build it internally.

Today I learned that the two second rule no longer applies when you have two long haired shepherds in the house.
