Subaru GT300 engine

This popped up on the Subaru Motorsports blog and I thought it is pretty relevent to the ft86. You might've seen the diagram posted before of the Legacy GT300 car.

This has mainly been brought up to show how the AWD is set up, and how that might be possible in the future on the ft86, but one thing I never considered is that the engine is also very low and mounted far back... like the ft86. So in theory an EJ20 swap could look very similar to this.

Quote:
The EJ20 type horizontally opposed engine - the only four-cylinder turbo engine in the 2011 SUPER GT, has been tuned for optimum performance on racing circuits by applying technologies continually developed for the WRC since the 1990s.

Quote:
The engine block has the same shape as the road car version but doesn't have a sump to collect oil. A dry sump system, which has an external reservoir for oil, has been employed instead in order to lower vehicle height as much as possible. Oil is thus forcefully circulated by scavenge pumps mounted on the underside of the engine.

Quote:
An induction box to conduct fresh air, a turbocharger to compress incoming air, and an intercooler, which cools down the compressed air, are all placed at the very front of the body. Both the length and layout of the exhaust pipe between the engine and turbo unit are designed for optimum shape for GT racing.

Quote:
The most distinctive features of the 2011 power unit of the Legacy GT300 are the changed position and shape of the intercooler and added induction box, which leads fresh air directly from the grille to intake. In the 2010 model, air was fed in from behind the headlights.
you can read more about it here

Front propeller shaft rather than transmission to wheel via axle shaft...

so thats how they can push back the engine and transmission while retaining AWD.

I wonder what kind of losses are expected and what kind of devices/materials used to compensate for it.

AWD in the FRS/BRZ would be stupid, FYI.

AWD won't happen anytime soon, but the turbo up front I do expect. There will be less room behind the motor so a front mounted location is more likely IMO.

My how those race car engine pictures are sexy. I think the BRZ GT300 will get this.

Pardon my trouble, but I'm not finding the front diff and drive shafts in that photo?

Sweet design. Those concerned with weight additions of a turbo system, shouldn't if it's designed in this same fashion. The weight would be positioned low thus keeping that cod low. Only issue would be the hassle of installation under the engine. Hope you can just lift the car and not have to remove the motor like you have to with the 350z's VQ to install twin turbos.

The pics are just of the engine. I was just saying the engine could easily be put in the BRZ, not the AWD system, and it seems pretty likely that's exactly what they did with the BRZ GT300.

Something may be amiss here.... I'm thinking this is the BRZ GT300 engine bay! This would confirm that it is RWD only, with the motor psuhed back significantly more than the street car.

I think this is the Legacy engine bay, with its horizontal dampers (it also has them at a goofy angle in the back).

Please forgive me if this was posted elsewhere.

It is definitely the Legacy. You can see the grill of the legacy and the photo has been around for years.

Ah, so the photos and diagram just don't go together. The engine shots are from the RWD Legacy, and the diagram is from the AWD one.

Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subaru_Legacy#Super_GT

Since they switched to RWD and got some wins, I would assume that it means the benefits of AWD were not good enough to keep, watering down the chances of the BRZ getting AWD.

Sorry to hijack the thread

I would kindly like to ask if there is any info or diagrams\sketches for a suspension system like that and how it works

It's just a basic push-rod suspension. Google will get you many explanations.
