Interesting Comparison Video

Ran across this one, thought it was a solid choice for comparison.

He gives the Boxster a couple points that I would have given to the BRZ, (practicality, desirability) but worth a watch anyway.

stuff can be tossed in the rear seats. i do it every road trip. makes the brz have 2x's the 'trunk' space as well...

also, most used porch owners tend to become the dude from friends. and seem to need to convince everyone else that what they got is desirable...

I can count on no hands all of the times I've seen a boxster mentioned by perspective or future upgrading twin owners.

I think its ok to compare - the 86 platform has always been compared to them. Comparing new to used... well I think your a mug to do that in todays market, but the lack of availability does make it hard.

The Porsche community (from just my cursory glances around forums) have welcomed the new model with open arms.

What are the costs of ownership of a 20 year old Porsche vs. a brand new twin?? Better include that in your “comparison.”

I've owned both.

The flat 6 sounds a million times better. Besides that I prefer the BRZ/86 in pretty much every other way.

I saw that to. IT was an interesting idea for a video, though I think comparing it to a 944 would be more realistic. Front engine, rear drive to front engine rear drive. Original S30 Datsun Z's and the 944's honestly seem like the closest 'spiritually' to the 86 twins (1st or 2nd gen). I'd really like an original 240Z brought up to more modern standards for suspension/brakes, etc, or a 944 myself.

But the price to get either in good condition would far exceed an 86, and in the end be heavy on the maintenance costs/responsibilities. And both have become, or are becoming collectible, making them investments. While this has its upside, the reality is that as they get more and more valuable, I'd be less and less likely to drive them, which is the whole point of wanting them in the first place...

Yeah think they are fairly similar in many ways, ive been in the transaxle world for 2 decades before I dived in to the 86 world. Its similar in the handling department aswell in some ways, they both can really be pushed very hard and have great balance and predictability, both practical and fairly small and light. From a driving perspective they are closer to the later transaxle cars which got a bit more soft and friendly. I still have my 924 turbo, though that one is way faster and sharper than my 86, its not as playful, i could drift the 86 with my eyes closed, the 924t its a bit different.

The 986 felt super cheap interior wise, with crappy gear change and to modern and insulated driving experience. The engine note was barely noticeable on full throttle, but its fixable. The base 2.5 version isn't exactly a rocketship, though engine power isn't so important for me, compared to steering feel for example.

True, and even more to the point, my BRZ lives with the seats folded down.

The storage space in my old cayman was surprisingly decent with the trunk and frunk combined......but it absolutely does not compare to the amount of space in the interior of the BRZ.

Also in the "desirabilty" category, no one is ever going to be impressed by the curb presence of an old model boxster. I feel like he was way off there. This is not a GT3

The other day I spotted a 1993 Toyota Supra Twin Turbo on my way into the grocery store. I’ll bet that 99% of people walking by would not give it a second thought. I stopped to take photos. On the way back to my car, I met the owner and stopped to chat. He had just bought the car for about $91,000. Let that sink in for a minute as you consider the wide range of new and pre-owned cars available. Personally, I prefer the vintage Supra to the new one for several reasons most notable is that the new one is too much BMW. Setting aside the cost to buy and then to maintain any car, preference is purely subjective to the individual. All the experts pointing to statistics and their ‘informed opinions’ is all background noise. I think the Porsche Vs. new BRZ is useful in that it suggests that there are alternatives to buying the latest and greatest, especially if someone is thinking, “I’ve always wanted to have a Porsche and I can do it now if I want to.” If something happened and I don’t get my 2022 BRZ, what new car would I be interested in? I found a Cayman S that would be a great consolation prize that is on its way to the dealer last I checked. I don’t know if it is still at the port of entry, on a train or truck. I saw the news: there is a ship on fire out on the Atlantic that has more than a thousand Porsche cars in it. Looks like Plan B may be heading to the bottom of the ocean. Crossing my fingers and hoping for a sober crew and a calm Pacific Ocean.

Supra is not a fair comparison. It's way more than just a car, it's an appreciating asset. You can buy one at $100,000, drive it for free for 10 years if you want to and then probably double your money. The twins and boxter absolutely do not fall into this category.
