Subaru has made strides in making their engines more refined across their lineup in the past decade. They commonly use hydraulic engine mounts now, something that used to be reserved for luxury cars only, they have done a good job at providing much better tunes for their engines as they did before. This is very apparent across the lifespan of the FA20 as well. The 2013 twins almost NEED an aftermarket tune to have an acceptable power delivery. It’s very chattery and peaky across the rev range. The 17–20 calibrations are much much better. The new WRX is a similar story. There’s no big power gains there, but the engine is a whole lot better in the way that it delivers that power.

Despite all this they are still boxer engines, so they will be loud and make weird noises that inline and V engines just do not. You can get the power delivery perfect and most refinement characteristics as well, but at idle they WILL sound like a bucket of bolts rattling around. A 100K 911 sounds exactly the same at idle.

Would you say the FA24 feels more similar to the 13-16 FA20 or the 17-20 FA20?

The FA24 is better than the FA20, but it didn’t make the ZN6/ZC6 any worse. They’re still fantastic cars and you have every right to still like them as much as you did a year ago. You don’t need excuses.

I can so much relate to this having owned an M2 for 3 years. The M2 is much more compromised car than ppl think. The reason everyone is raving about it is because its the most engaging car in the BMW line up but its still a souped up normal two door coupe based on a chassis dating from 2012. The new Gen (G series) will be a big step up but its also heavier so don't expect any lightweight feel even tough the G series hides its weight in an incredibly effecient way, as showned by the raving G80/82 M3/4 reviews.


I could of also baught a cayman/boxster but my reasonning was that for more than double the price will I have double the fun ? As for the engine I am eager to compare it to my past 2010 MX5 wich I loved driving with 167hp and around 2500lbs weight.

More like the 17-20 FA20, but that doesn’t paint the picture quite right.

If the 17 FA20 feels ~10% better than the 13 FA20, the FA24 feels 30-50% better than that. This is entirely subjective of course and mostly based on the motor’s power, powerband, willingness to rev, and ‘refinement’.

Everyone will have a different opinion, but stock for stock the FA24 is overall a big step forward.

I think you'll get a lot more status but is there anything really more fun on the road than an MX5? I'd even argue they're more fun than Elises because they're more playful. And a well set up NC can even be quicker than an Elise around a short course. Needed a back seat, like tin tops for rigidity but man I would be so OK with an MX5. Where I wouldn't be with a Cayman/Boxster, M2, New Z or the New 3850 lbs M240i. Crazy world haha

I had a manual M2 Competition and felt the same way. May have been quick but it was boring as hell, no engagement, 30 layers of insulation between driver and car.

I couldn't agree more. I love the M2 Comp. It's my favorite BMW built since the E46. It's really nice in so many ways. It's fast, fun, well-made, etc. That said, it's not a sports car. I've driven a couple on the track and the experience is miles from that of an 86. Our cars are just so much more focused and engaging when driven hard.

thought about dumping my f80 m3 for an M2 comp... but they get rid of alot of luxury items like the adaptive suspension and it weighs the same. you're only really getting the benefit of a shorter wheelbase. 3500 pounds for a sedan is borderline acceptable to me. for a sports car absolutely not.

new M2 will probably be weighing in around 3650-3700. insane.

Just had a run in our tuned 2015 after a week in the 2022. The increase in torque is definitely noticeable. The gen1 car feels more raw and that enhances your feeling of speed but the 2.4 offers more torque everywhere.



The 2.0 pulls nicely after 4000 but the 2.4 pulls better everywhere. The car is also noticeably more stable reducing the "feeling" of speed.


Someone else brought up the NC 2.0 motor comparison. The FA has a better top end than the Duratec and although the Miata is lighter both gen1 and gen2 twins feel better up top in terms of pull and are more rigid than the NC.


I will be dropping in a 2.5 with cams in the NC and we will see how the comparison changes then.

I got a bit rude because I'm interested in telling the truth about the difference between the two cars. Not saving people's feelings and I've already apologized. It's still an awesome car. And it's not like an AP1 vs an AP2. Its a much bigger difference than that. Maybe you just don't want to believe it. And I'm sure a few were. It's the internet.
