yes, i agree that any oil with the SAE/DEXOS certification spec on it is good oil.

yes, i agree, it's cheaper because it's not name brand, or has to pay for a marketing department.

but even with the cheapest, most disposable vehicles i've ever owned, i just can't get past the cheapness of the oil and have to use the name brand stuff. it just makes me feel better.

Every 3 years or 6000 miles, whichever comes first.

Interesting discussion.

I'm coming out a long line of German cars and was surprised by how SHORT the interval is on this vehicles. My E46 BMW had an OCI of 15K miles, the Mk6 GTI was 10K miles, and my F32 BMW was roughly 12K miles or 12 months. The E46 was at 130K miles and was running better than new and getting better gas mileage when I sold it. The other two cars never hit that high of mileage due to driving less, but each was running like a champ with no issues and some somewhat hard use. Each a testament to how well synthetic oils hold up over time, though looking back 15K miles was probably was a bit too long.

I think the 5K/6mo interval is fair. It's easy to remember, if nothing else, and cheap insurance. I'll use whatever "normal" brand name (Mobil1, Castrol, etc) has the right weight and spec in stock.

I find this odd that the Australian model requires servicing every 15,000 km's or 12 months.

I will confirm when I pick mine up this Thursday and check the owners manual.
You would think an Australian climate would require shorter service intervals.

Some of that may be due to the oil filter size. The BMWs use cartridge filters so you get more filter per filter than a twist-on.

I'm definitely not complaining!

Interestingly last time it was 15,000 km / 9 month for Subaru, and 12,500 km/ 9 month for Toyota

I agree! Saves time and money.
I can confirm the owners manual is for 12 months / 15k km's.

First drive was heaven, and now trying to find the ideal seating position without letting my legs get in the way. Also no parking sensors -

Exhaust is too quiet, but you can hear some pops on rev-matched downshift.
A nice tame exhaust from Japan will be ordered in the following months.

Good to now I'm not the only one haha. It's quite likely that with an exhaust system, though quite tame, I can hear it even more. I'm usually getting ready to change my oil at 3K and get it done around the 4-5K interval. It's the sound that particularly bothers me. The smoothness is so welcome with each change.

I don't think it's exhaust in your case. We both know you aren't imagining it. I developed the ear sometime in my teen years so it's nothing special for me. The difference from the oil cooler was a surprise but whatever the effect, it makes sense intuitively.

case in point: most of the Toyota mainstream cars (i.e. Camry, etc) with cartridge filters since ~2005 or so have had 7000 upwards to 10k miles change intervals.

if thinner oil and longer intervals equals premature engine failure, it sure isn't happening with the millions of cars on the road every day that falls under this category...

having said that, I'm well aware this platform has a different engine and Subaru has their own recommendations and tolerances.
