Think of designing a car like filming a movie.

The chief engineer is like the director, working directly with the design teams providing feedback on a daily basis.

If these comments are true, Tada-san will be securing funding and resources. Selling the design to the big wigs higher up. Like a producer would in film making.

The mid cycle refresh for FT-86 will probably be limited to a face-lift and a bump in torque.

The way I see it, FT-86 will only make it to a second generation if it remains a Subaru engineered and manufactured vehicle. Toyota will probably set a vision/design goal for the FT-86 but will have little to no engineering control. Subaru will probably sway the design to further reflect the Subaru brand image; turbo charging and more grip. The Toyota/Scion version will probably get a hybrid powertrain instead.

Hmm... sometimes I think... well I don't know if my information is all up to date. But where is BMW involved in this? anything about an Inline 6 from them? and if they will influence this Toyota Car at all? or are they a strictly Lexus partnership only?

Radically different it seems like he meant, potentially for the engine. I would think they would be absolutely crazy to mess with chassis and suspension since they hit such a home run there.

And even for the engine, radically different might not be too different like some of the others have said.

The Camry is one of the best selling cars America has ever seen. Ever. So why fix something that’s not broken? We’re not sure.

Reports tell us that CEO Akio Toyoda wants a whole new Camry that evokes more passion and more charisma. But this new Camry might be scaring away lackluster Camry consumers with an aggressive transformation.

But then again, it might not.
Simple answer to this, make two Camry's at the same time like they did in Japan in the 90's. One Hardtop model or 4 door coupe how the Europeans like to call them and a normal model next to it.

I think if Toyota built the current Mazda6 as the Camry, they'd be happy with the design. I don't think he wants to ruin their bread and butter. He just wants it to be less appliance-y.

WIth only 250 hp from a 2.0L 4-cyl, I would hope the base model would be well below $100k. Even at half that price, it would seem to be very underpowered.

Isn't the Kia stinger supposed to be over 300hp 4 cylinder turbo under 3000 lbs and $30k? Isn't the new mustang 300 hp 4 cylinder turbo under $30k?

No way in hell this car will have less than 300hp base and cost any where near Corvette territory. Nissan has the ID-X coming with a rumored 200hp-260hp at 2800 lbs for under $30k and a lighter turbo 4 Z that will cost less than the 370z.

just sounds bs.

I'd be fine with both of those engines being options, but not at that price range. A revvy, high RPM V6 turbo would be a fun engine, I think.

I don't think it will come with those two drivetrains. And here is why:

Meet the brains behind the Toyota GT 86

This new 86 however, is just the beginning of Toyota's sports car renaissance. Soon, there will be an entry-level sports car, and of course, a Big Dog range-topper. You know the name.

"With my next sportscar," explains Tada-san, "I want to make a big... ‘wow'." His arms gesticulate large vortex circles. "Nobody expected us to build something like the GT 86. I want to give the world a shock." Does that mean we are - whisper it - getting a new Supra?

He laughs. Quite loudly. "Of course, anything is possible." Sasaki-san also chirrups in. "With the 86, we didn't want to use driver aids - that's the thinking. But new Supra means big power, so we need something for that. It'll be a different avenue of sports car from the GT 86."

Tantalisingly, neither of them would formulate anything concrete, so it remains as thus: the GT 86 is the hot new thing on the block, and a new Supra is "just one avenue of sports car Toyota could take. There are others too." One thing is for sure however: if Tada-san has his way, the new sports car definitely won't be a hybrid.

Toyota Supra-style replacement favoured by incoming chairman

Industry journal Automotive News reports Takeshi Uchiyamada, the man set to be announced as Toyota’s next chairman later this week at the company’s annual shareholders’ meeting, believes Toyota’s next sports car should be comparable to the larger six-cylinder Supra that ended production in 2002 so as to not overlap with the smaller four-cylinder Toyota 86.

“It’s futile if we make something similar [to the 86]”, he said.

So basically a new Supra and new MR2? I'm curious how the Supra will fair...there was no Cayman or Alfa 4C when it existed before and if the $16k comes to light (2017) why wouldn't you pursue a used FR-S/BRZ which will probably be priced comparably? Just doesn't sound like strong marketing to me...my guess FT-1 will be a Lexus car and the $16k will never exist or will be FWD and replace the tC. *2 cents*

Apples and oranges. Have you ever driven a 2000lb MR before? I have one and the FRS, I guess I bought the same car twice??
