PSS is the best street tire mentioned, but since our cars are camber limited you will eat up the soft shoulders on the car after a few autocrosses. You can rotate to help manage wear, but at some point they'll all be pretty worn.

I'd probably go Z2 SS, they should be pretty decent in the rain, should be more resistant to the shoulder wear, and you'll be faster.

Good tire, competitive with RS3s and Z2s. But not legal for street class this year due to TW.

I know that. Just wanted to ask since this post is more active with people about knowledge on tires. I searched around and didn't find much.
I guess I'll post somewhere else... Lol

I've tracked with RS-R's at least half a dozen times on various courses, and I daily drove a set for a few months too.

They have relatively soft side walls, so you might want to pump up the tire pressure a bit to compensate. It doesn't take much to get them to operating temp, though they tend to overheat and gum up on track really easily. Kind of loud for a daily too.

Very subjective, not super informative, and no concrete data... I know. So if I were you I'd buy a set and test them out for myself.

Would I get another set? Nope.
Do I regret having purchased three sets? Nope.
Am I glad to have tested it out for myself? Yep.

It looks like the Bridgestones are the pretty much the tire to have if you're only doing autocross. However, since I've moved to a place where I may be able to get a few track days in, I'd like to have some tires that will hold up to track abuse as well. It seems like the go to street tire for that is still the RS3, but some folks at the last local event I went to thought the Dunlop Z2SS would be better. I'm currently on Z2s now. They're great for a 40 degree autocross in March, but they need a garden sprayer in the Georgia summers. Are the Z2SS really that much better at heat management, or should I stick with my first instinct and get some RS3s in 225/45/17?

If you want both track and autocross I would go with Z2star spec. But the Bridgestones are something special at autocross at the moment.

Has anyone actually had the RE-71R's on a track? Just seems like a lot of speculation on what they may or may not do with extended heat. Nobody is complaining about it on the Tire Rack reviews or other reviews I've read.

I ended up purchasing a set of them and will be testing them out at Road America on May 2nd. We'll see what happens...

Look in the next issue of Grassroots Motorsports for the latest testing of all the top tires.

And take it with a grain of salt because the people who write those things all have favorites. Personally the most reliable source of what is good and what isn't comes from your local scca group imo. If I had to base something of a magazine, I would trust TireRack's Testing more.

Andy Hollis does the testing and it's definitely fair testing, but the car they do the testing on isn't exactly representative of our cars.

I think at this point they will hold up fine. They heat up quickly but some other reports stated they didn't really overheat even after several runs in succession. The alarming wear people saw I think was more due to surface than anything else. A track isn't going to be abrasive like some autox sites.

The one thing on a track I'd be cognitive of is they seem to be like A6s where they don't really give much audible feedback when pushed, they just let go when over the edge. Really pushing it at RA takes some balls to begin with though.

And he also conducts tests that are somewhat useless and contradict what everyone says on here about pinching tires.
