meh...I've had the car since June 2012, and it's got somewhere around 70,000 kms on it so far. If I have to replace an O2 sensor in a couple more years, I can swallow that. If I poison the front cat in a couple of years... Awesome, I have a reason to finally nut up an put a header on it! You're far from the only one who doesn't care about that godawful racket. I wish I could wrap my head around it, but I just can't do it. I'm a windows down kind of guy when the weather is warm/hot, and I rarely use my A/C. When I cruise through downtown or pull up beside another vehicle at an intersection, that sound echoing back at me just makes me angry. Quote:
I'm not an automotive engineer or a mechanic (let alone a master mechanic), and I'm glad I'm not. I like working on my cars...if I worked on cars for a living, that's the last thing I would want to do in my off time. The following is just my own experience and opinion... I have no problem with Shell's 91. Some people say it doesn't work for them. In Ontario at least, it is "E0". It kills the crickets in my car every time. When the ambient temperatures are below 10C or so, there are no crickets regardless of fuel used. Once above that, the car runs noticeably better on the 94 with ethanol...unfortunately, that is about the same temp the crickets start to come out. They increase in volume and pitch as the temperature goes up. I don't add anything to my fuel tank below 10C-ish. Above that...only if I am using gas with ethanol in it. Modern 2-stroke oils burn pretty clean. My snowmobile uses about 1L of injector oil per tank of gas (40L), so a 40:1 ratio give or take depending on how hard I ride it. When adding 2oz (~60ml) to the tank of my car (50L), the ratio is more like 840:1. negligible. I'm not gonna sweat it. Am I saying it is the solution? No. It is a Band-Aid at best, but in my case it works. If I develop any issues, I'll post 'em up. I have heard of other manufacturers having issues with direct injection pumps and noises, but I don't specifically remember BMW. LOL, If I pulled up beside a $70K BMW and heard crickets that weren't coming from my car, I'd have to point and give 'em a Nelson laugh.

Thanks Chris for the tip. I am planning on using 94 this summer with the new setup and will definitely give this a go.

Don't do it, Slick. I keep telling you, you're fast enough as is. Just noticed your times at CMP....both times are very impressive! Nicely done. http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showt...t=38865&page=9 |

to expand and validate what Chris has explained.
[QUOTE=roddy;2146029
Someone on the forum suggested trying a TC-W3 rated 2-stroke oil, so I did. I found that as little as 1oz makes a difference (about the same difference as 4-5oz of Lucas treatment), and ~2oz kills them completely. It does not effect performance at all. I have not had any catalytic converter or O2 sensor issues either, and using such a small amount, I don't expect I will.[/QUOTE] Just had a talk with our forklift maintenance guy who is also a car enthusiast about this situation. Has a 26 old mustang gt that he babies more than our cars. Was also a ford mechanic for many years and really knows his stuff. Was surprised that the crickets appear moving up to 94 from 91 and said that adding the minimal amounts of two stroke oil to a tank of gas is not going to have any ill affects. On a frightening note, perhaps the mod bug never ends as he just bought a new manifold for his car for $1500 US just because. Which in turn led him to buy the supporting parts as well. Not a good omen going forward. |
