Tips and Tricks: Disconnecting the Battery Necessary Post Intake Install?

hey guys i installed the Takeda intake today and disconnected the Positive terminal of the battery throughout the install and reconnected it when i was done because i heard this was recommended to reset the computer, i have heard to undo the negative terminal but i found that it was hard to get the bolt loose so i did the positive ( right side ) terminal... is this the same thing since the battery is dead either way ? should i pull out a fuse to reset the ecu and put it back in ? no CEL came on post install , just wondering If You guys have any Tips and Tricks post intake and any aftermarket part install!

Yes. The most important tip is to have your car tuned for the intake. I've heard but I don't remember where that it could damage the engine.

I'd definitely check to see if that is true or not.

where could i go for the tune? and that would mess with the warranty right? although i know this intake would but i would just swap back the stock one lol

An intake won't void your warranty. You can get a tuning kit by ECUtek from vendors like FA20CLUB , Perrin, Visconti. A tune will void your warranty but the good news is you get to have a copy of the stock tune so you just switch the car back to that before bringing it to dealership via laptop.

how do you even unto the negative terminal on the battery, i undid the side bolt and it wouldnt come off

Once the nut is loosened on the side you should just have to wiggle it around and pull up on it. Once its off you can hit the brake pedal a couple times to clear the residual charge from the system to reset the ECU, don't need to do any of this waiting for 20 mins stuff. Then start it up and let it idle for a good ten minutes so it re-learns the dead zone for the gas pedal. You might get some issues with bogging here and there for the first 100 miles or so while the ECU figures out new fuel trims for itself.

I installed my GReddy Intake without loosing the battery and all that stuff. aftr installing intake, i start up and idle for about 5minutes. so far no issues. but how'd u know if u have bogging issue? is the CEL going to show up? idk lol im new to this stuff.

Say that to a dealer operating in a monopoly Here in UAE - Dubai the dealer is the sole supplier of Toyota through out the country and they do not agree on any sort of modification to the vehicle even if you install wheels that are an inch bigger than stock ones. I just wish that we were able to install intakes and cat backs without sacrificing warranties.

Sometimes when you install in intake, the ECU doesn't know how to cope with the extra airflow the MAF is seeing and will sometimes hesitate or stutter when you get on the gas because it isn't sure of how much fuel to add for the new amount of air coming in. It all depends on how drastically the intake affects the air/fuel ratio. Some intakes can be bolted on with no ECU reset with no adverse effects. And some intakes, like we are seeing on the FA20, are causing such air/fuel ratio issues that the ECU needs to be professionally tuned to overcome them.

So in answer to your question. Even though you aren't experiencing any bog or CE lights doesn't mean that your engine is running as well or as safely as it could be with the new intake. I would suggest at least resetting the ECU to give it the chance to learn new fuel trims for the increased airflow. If your lucky you might feel a couple more ponies on the ol' butt dyno
