I too was going to buy a used Cayman (09-12) but I opted for the Hakone 86 for the warranty. Your thread makes me feel better, but I still want that Cayman.

I was in the same situation, but as DD the twins are more practical. I would cry putting 15k a year on a cayman. I am looking to get a 14 Cayman S as a weekend car. Maybe next year, let’s see how this year goes.

I don't understand why one would cry putting 15,000 miles on a Cayman annually. They're great daily drivers and made to do that. It's not like a Pagani or something.

Overall cost and Maintenance cost over time. Brakes, tires, oil etc. if you are going to burn miles on a highway the BRZ is way cheaper and easier to deal with.

Here’s is my example:

Bought 16 BRZ - 28k - will pay off car in a year. So about 4.5 year loan and will have about 65k on the car.

Used Cayman S was looking at about 35k on average with 45k miles. If you consider that it would take me 5 years to pay off, then after paid off the Cayman would have 110k miles on it. Hate still owing money on a car with 100k miles.

I like to own cars without payments for a longtime. I still have my 04 WRX, no payments for 12 years. Can’t beat that and she still hammers.

To me it just did not makes sense and to be honest having driven both, the BRZ is a very good alternative and better value for sure.

There are many commuting miles where I am not really appreciating or even enjoying driving the car. That’s just the reality of life.

Working at a dealer, I quite often hear car owners confuse cost to own vs depreciation. As for most of us who have to work hard for our money, the value prospect plays a big part in our sports car choice. When money becomes less of an obstacle, I’d gladly daily something more Special in line with my income. Not to mention I got a 7 year 120 k mile extended warranty on my gt4

If money is remotely a concern, no way you should buy a used Porsche...

Like my neighbor said half-jokingly: that's a rich man's car!

Honestly, if you can't pay cash for a used Porsche and still have significant $$$ in the bank to take care of unanticipated expenses, you really really shouldn't buy one.

The good news is that the FT86 is actually more fun on the street, and just as fun at the track (albeit slower)! At least vs. a non-S 987.2...

That engine- and suspension-modded 981 Cayman S I'll admit was a thrill ride at Watkins Glen compared to my suspension-modded BRZ...

^YMMV

5 1/2 years of ownership for my Cayman S. It's now 14 years old and has 115,000 miles. Cost of ownership has been fine. Other than replacing both window regulators (one proactively), 2 blown speakers and both catalytic converters needing replacement (one under warranty), all maintenance/upkeep has been routine and/or not expensive.

I'm pretty sure my Boxster S total ownership cost per year was less than the BRZ. I sold it for about $2,000 less than I paid for it.

'17 BRZ PP vs. '11 Cayman 2.9

Total ownership cost does not tell me how much you’re spending per year. If you’re budget conscious out of necessity, that short term yearly cost is far more important than the long term balance.

Risk of things going bad wrong with Porsches is non-zero. If things go wrong, it's $$$$...

Anyway, that's my 0.02. If I hadn't had the cash on hand to buy it outright with plenty left over to take care of any issues (which it turns out was required), I wouldn't have bought it.

Anybody talking about making payments over 5 years to buy a ~10 year-old Porsche, my advice is don't do it...

Two major reasons I went BRZ over Cayman were:

1. I have two kids and the back seat was needed and has been used.
2. I did not want to still have a payment with a car with 100k miles on it.

The Caymen will come when the kids are done with college.
