I updated my music memory stick and played Carlos Santana's "Maria Maria". Great big whomping bass with no observable distortion. Since I was in the garage with the engine off, I could feel the air pressure on my left pants leg. I have my 2015 FR-S sitting side by side so I did a bit of A/B testing. The tone controls behave differently between the two, and the Harmon Kardon unit in the 2020 86 seems just a bit less warm, but still more than adequate for me.

Perfect. That is two for two that meet my needs.
My taste in music leans towards a but of distortion anyway.

Did you end up using the stock usb plug on your FRS or did you have to buy an updated one so that Carplay can work?

I use Android Auto. It works fine with the "stock" 2020 USB, though keep in mind that it is not the USB the car shipped with from the factory, but the one that came with the HK installation kit for the 2020 models. I assume the install is done at the port.

Oh okay because I just landed a deal on a 2020 head unit for $270 from a wrecked car and didn’t know if mine would work or not. I’ll have to buy one then. Plus the jumper harness is so damn expensive

Just bought my new to me 17 BRZ from a private seller two days ago. Stereo sounded like crap and noticed the door speakers not working. This thread helped me figure out about the rear amp which seemed to be plugged in properly. Checked the fuse next, and the fuse was blown. Sounds so much better now- but not great and the head unit seems to have a delay and doesn’t update the song title when moving to the next song in pandora. Stays only on the first song played, even after 30 minutes of driving. Weird.

I just went off his first post, which said his driver's side door speaker wasn't working. I thought you had read something I missed.

It is definitely worth a check.

I am trying to install an older OEM audio+ kit into a 2020 hakone, has anyone here done this or have advice/input?

Wish I could help, but I don’t have anything to offer unless you have something specific.

I would think trying to get at least 17-19 OEM HU working in a 2020 car would be simply plug and play since 2020 is when the HU changed and required some wiring mumbo jumbo to get it working......

Don’t put that shit into a nice Hakone. I upgraded to a Kenwood and it’s worlds better. First bought a Sony and was very disappointed by the sound. Kenwood for the win.
