With 3.55 gears (about 2,800 rpm at 60 mph), the 427 Vette was a mid-13 second car with a 105 mph trap speed. With 3.08 gears (about 2,400 rpm at 60 mph), it was almost a 14-sec car. Unless geared for the dragstrip, very few muscles cars of that era were quick by today’s standards.
Yeah, those cars weren't as fast as people remember... L88 Corvettes and Hemi 'cuda, those were my dream cars as a kid, I thought they were SO FAST! In reality, mid-13s at <110 mph. About on par with my old 3.1 liter 240Z (107mph), way way WAY slower than departed LS-engine FD RX-7 (129mph in 1/4 and hit 184.8 in the standing mile with a 6.0 LS2, prolly woulda hit ~132 in the 1/4 with subsequently installed 6.8 LS3)!

In the test you linked they apparently tested with two people in the car plus "equipment" with a test weight of 3500+ vs curb weight of 3100+! But still, accounting for the weight vs. trap speed it's clear that the tri-power 427 was *way* overrated at 435hp gross...

Ya, my other 'fun' car is a Challenger, 440-4bbl, 4sp. I wouldn't line up against the new HP Challengers and Mustangs...
BUT, the classics are still awesome cars to drive. Lots of people come over admire ask questions....It's a different experience to driving a new car.

It's amazing what performance is being squeezed out of smaller-displacement cars these days by a few manufacturers. The new Golf 8R is running 4.03 seconds to 60 and a 12.44 quarter mile @ 111 mph, with a 2 liter, nominally 320 hp engine. Wow.

If that's too pokey for you, import a Merc A45, it manages about 12 flat with its 2 litre. It'll cost you though!

Porsche 917 was not a sports car, lol.

It was 100% a race car. Never built or sold for the street. Nevermind how suicidal that notion would have been.

Yeah it was kinda random that that car came up, not *remotely* a street car like I mentioned in my reply! The space-frame is welded up thin(ish) wall aluminum tubing. *VERY* lightweight and with a limited lifetime. They pressurized them with nitrogen and put a pressure gauge in the cockpit, to determine when cracks started to develop!

But still, this happened (not the CanAm version but still...):

Yeah, i saw the performance metric of the new G8R and it's insane. I wonder what is the MSRP on that thing. Too bad VWs are not the best with their quality control and if you get a lemon, look out. And have they resolved carbon buildup issues yet?

That issue has been fixed since the MK7 generation, technically. Unfortunately, North America did not receive the MK7R with both DI and PFI while ROW market cars did. So hopefully they will include that on the North American cars this time...

2 years go I got to do 6 laps on an autocross course in a new Ferrari Portofino/ 590bhp turbo V8. I'll be honest my 2016 FRS could have done better on that tight course--- better handling. Maintenance on the Portofino won't be cheap.

Pretty car, but not worth $215,000 .

As a teen I had the opportunity to sit in a Ferrari 365 GTB /4. I was smitten!!
