Power and torque are about acceleration, Δv. A "fast" car that can accelerate quickly can maneuver easier than a slow car. You have more options in traffic. Sometimes you have more control on curves if you know how to use the power. My dad likes to say that he drives a fast car so that he doesn't have to drive fast. People in slow cars find themselves driving fast trying to get ahead of situations a fast car can just Δv out of. |

My FA20 is fine power wise, running 8psi.
I also thought that it handled really average stock with the Sachs shocks and dampers, so much so they didn't last 6 months. The OEM tyres are crap. Most importantly though..... Who gives a fuck what people think, do what you want, stop whinging about what others do. Why do people sweat the irrelevant stuff? Flaming whinging mongrels. Disclaimer: no butts were harmed in the making of rhis post.

Thanks to the engineering skill of Toyota and Subaru, our Toybaru has a great chassis that can handle much more power than the 200 hp produced by the FA20, hence there has been pleas from day 1 for more power. And further enhancement to the chassis only makes the pleas grow louder. Special editions of the Toybaru with slightly higher power have been grossly insufficient to quell the desire for more power.
Among many other factors, Tada-san has maintained that a 'balance' needs to be maintained, and the pleas for more power seem to have fallen on deaf ears. Of course, more power requires bigger brakes, radiators, fuel tank, wheels/tyres, etc. Just as important, is the driving skill of the driver. Currently, the Toybaru doesn't have enough power to overwhelm the chassis, but that 'safety margin' may be eroded if much more power is added. Therefore, most of the changes made to the Toybaru has been focused on improving the chassis, leaving the owners to add power to their taste. There are ways to make the Toybaru go faster, eg lighter wheels, carbon graphite drive shaft, 2-piece brake rotors, freeflow exhaust, tuning of ECU, lighter flywheel, etc. Even Tada-san admitted that he was very impressed by the after-market offerings for the Toybaru, so much so that the 2016 face-lift was changed in scope and delayed, after taking into account of the development in the after-market. Of course more power is more fun. I don't race my Toybaru and there is more power than I can use on the road 95% of the time. It matters little to me if that % goes up to 98%. I am very happy with the handling and agility of the Toybaru 100% of the time. The mods (carbon graphite drive-shaft, super-light wheels, 2-piece brake rotors) I installed make the Toybaru accelerate notably faster, even though I didn't increase any power, per se. |
