If we believe anything is being change power wise, which personally I don't, I think it might be more likely that its less powerful if they intend to reach more markets than the subaru - which also plays into the need to change gearing...

Playing devil's advocate. People said the same about the Zupra. That BrokeMotorWagon wouldn't allow Toyota's version to outshine theirs.

True, but the two pairings differ to a significant degree. The Bimmer is a convertible and more of a GT, while the Supra is a coupe and more of a sportscar, which would justify its better performance. The twins though are exactly that: near-identical twins in the same market segment.

I agree that the engine performance will be lower in other regions cause of the stricter emission regulations. Toyota is faced with a problem, that Subaru doesn't have it by focusing mainly with the NA marker. However, gearing is not an option in EU. We didn't get in the '17 refresh the power updates (red intake, new header) and we didn't get the shorter drive ratio (4.3:1) either.

It will be interesting, they will be threading a needle on emissions we know that. I was wondering if for the UK/EU they could go full fat.

They would surely be planning a certain sales number across all models they have, and that a very carefully calculated emissions figure will dictate how much they can go over with this car - which they may well have known for a very long time and potentially might be that 217/177 figure talked about a few years ago. Not sure if final drive changes are out of the question - missing the 17 update was more to do with engine rather than final drive.

But honestly I think as far as the US/AUS/JPN markets are considered its likely going to be the full fat just as it has been announced with the BRZ.

For those that we're thinking that Toyota is waiting for the Olympics to reveal the 86, I wonder if this just put a dent in that:

I honestly don't know why they think this car is warranting such a spectacular reveal.

Lexus just revealed a launch edition for the IS500 and that just took place at a race track.

I dont know if they could get that much more publicity and attention at some special event rather than a closed off race track.

that's what all new vehicle reveals are moving towards, even the mundane suv/cuv reveals.

by being an invite only event, they get to control the entire flow of information about the car, making it all positive, or the invite-ee's won't be invited back to the brands next reveal.

it should really make you more skeptical of any information about any new vehicle, because the reviewers literal future depends on giving every new vehicle a positive glowing review, even if the entire interior falls apart and starts on fire.

Dudes there are many reasons for the delay...as many stated Toyota is still busy with marketing the GR Yaris, maybe they wanted Subaru to have a little more spotlight, Toyota just doesn't really care for a car that is barely a blip on their stockholders' radars, etc...

And remember this leak from a while ago? Hybrid only Sienna and Venza were just launched and the 86 is up next this summer..

100% will change, but with virtual events it's easier.

Toyota can easily seed press cars worldwide, and still host a single public reveal event and all the reviews get posted at the same time after NDA expiration for the intended effect.

End user will probably not see anything in person until an actual auto show or when it starts hitting dealers. Or the occasional Cars & Coffee event in SoCal.

They were early adopters of the car though and have some insight as a result

IMO that one guy's "insights", are largely b.s. Frankly, I think he's a bit of an idiot... The worst kind, one who presents himself as being an authority.
